Being Female

I said before I was angry with the fact that a lot of my life seems to have been dominated by various opinions about what it means to be female which, as I'm discovering, bear no resemblance to my experience or, when I stop to think about it, the reality of other people's experiences. In forming my own ideas about what it means to be female, I've ( Read more... )

That is true, and fortunately not what I said.

Similarly, in situations where young can't be cared for, some species stop having them or kill them. Female rabbits can re-absorb their litters before birth, if their environment is too stressful. Overcrowding can (probably) cause loss of sex drive amongst humans - it's been observed in Japan.

Yeah, the environmental stress thing is really interesting. I remember hearing about animals in safari parks who were having problems breeding because any time they moved there were many tourist trucks surrounding them, balloons overhead and they couldn't get any privacy. Also the thing about Japan is really interesting too.

So basically, the problem with female is an etymological one. We need to change the definition in light of new information indicating the current meaning contains too many descriptors that are not necessarily concurrent.

I'm not sure I meant concurrent, but it's the closest word I could think of. I think it gets the general gist of what I'm saying across.

That's a really clear and concise way of putting it. It does get the gist across.
