[mix] a howling in the factory yard

Feb 22, 2008 05:42

Okay, this is the soundtrack to a story I haven't finished yet! (I'm already pretty sure this story is going to be the horse to beat for my "favorite of the year" on the annual roundup, though.)

This is the soundtrack to part 12 of Broken Wings, which is technically an interlude so it gets its own title (and its own soundtrack); the current working title is "What The Ocean Can Know Of A Body", but "A Howling In The Factory Yard" is looking like it's got about a fifty percent chance of beating it out. I was uploading a few tracks to my Pownce mp3blog, and I realized, hey, you know, this playlist I'm working from would make a decent mix if I just did a little bit of extra work on it.

(Don't worry, the mix isn't spoilerish. Which is to say, if you can figure out what happens at the end of the story just from the songs on this mix, you're in better shape than I am, as I haven't figured out the end of the story yet. *g*)

This mix comes accompanied by a big fat WARNING, though. And not for spoilers. No, the warning is that this mix has, bracketing every track, a track from the Conet Project. Which is to say, a clip of a recording taken from a numbers station. Trust me, there's a good reason for it. (The reason would be vaguely spoilerish, for stuff that comes clear in, oh, the first two sections of the story, but I shall still forego explaining it. Just go with me.) The warning is because some people -- Best Beloved included -- find numbers stations creepy as fuck. If you are one of them, remove the odd-numbered tracks from the zipfile, with the exception of the last one; the mix works without them, though it's better with them.

01. (German voice)

02. Coming Up // Ani DiFranco
[my fingers are red and swollen from the cold, i'm getting bold in my old age, so go ahead, try the door, it doesn't matter anymore. i know the weakhearted are strongwilled and we are being kept alive until we're killed. he's up there. the ice is clinking in his glass. he sends me little pieces of paper. i don't ask, i just empty my pockets and wait]

03. (Phonetic Alphabet)

04. This Place Is A Prison // The Postal Service
[there's guards at the on-ramps, armed to the teeth, and you may case the ground from the cascades to puget sound, but you are not permitted to leave. i know there's a big world out there like the one i saw on the screen, in my living room late last night it was almost too bright to see.]

05. (Voice speaking English)

06. Wish (Komm Zu Mir) // Run Lola Run Soundtrack
[i wish i was a hunter in search of different food; i wish i was the animal which fits into that mood; i wish i was a person of unlimited breath; i wish i was a heartbeat that never comes to rest.]

07. (Voice speaking German)

08. Risingson // Massive Attack
[why you wanna take me to this party and breathe, i'm dying to leave. every time we grind you know we sever lines. where have all those flowers gone, long time passing. why you keep me testing, keep me tasking. you keep on asking. toylike people make me boylike.]

09. (Russian man)

10. Outer Space // Freezepop
[needing to find my place, something just feels wrong. knowing i don't belong, escaping to outer space. run away, far away.]

11. (English man)

12. Angels of the Silences // Counting Crows
[little angels hang above my head and read me like an open book. suck my blood, break my nerve, offer me their arms. well, i will not be an enemy of anything at all.]

13. (Sharp Voice)

14. Fugitive // Bush
[i am a fugitive on the run, i carry the weight of what i've done, so don't carry the weight, don't carry the weight, i don't carry the weight. you can't change the world, but you can change what's to come.]

15. (Achtung)

16. Karma Police // The Brown Derbies
[karma police, i've given all i can, it's not enough, i've given all i can, but we're still on the payroll. this is what you get when you mess with us. for a minute there, i lost myself.]

17. (Voice)

18. Famous Blue Raincoat // Leonard Cohen
[four in the morning, the end of december; i'm writing you now just to see if you're better.]

19. (Moscow Coup)

20. Half Jack // The Dresden Dolls
[and when i let him in i feel my stitches getting sicker, i try to wash him out but like she said, the blood is thicker. i see my mother in my face but only when i travel. i run as fast as i can run but jack comes tumbling after.]

21. (Konec)

22. Harvest // Opeth
[halo of death, all i see is departure, mourner's lament but it's me who's the martyr.]

23. (Spanish Counting)

24. How To Disappear Completely // Radiohead
[in a little while i'll be gone. the moment's already passed. yeah, it's gone, and i'm not here, this isn't happening. i'm not here, this isn't happening.]

25. (Tones)

26. Untitled // Fuel
[i wanted to find one thing that was mine and leave this behind. but i can't find my way to get far away and bury these days.]

27. (Tones)

28. One Man Army // Our Lady Peace
[tightly hold your hand, take a deep breath, give them the finger, are you worried that your thoughts are not quite clear? i remember falling, i remember marching, like a one-man army. through the blaze, i know i'm coughing. i believe in something. i don't wanna remember falling for their lies.]

29. (Tones)

30. Get Up, Jonah // Bruce Cockburn
[I woke up this morning thinking about Turkish drummers; it didn't take long -- I don't know much about Turkish drummers -- but it made me think of Germany, and the guy who sold me cigarettes, who'd been in the Afghan secret police, who made the observation that it's hard to live. Then I was reminded of the proprietor of a Vietnamese restaurant in Quebec who used to be head of the secret police in Da Nang -- and it occurred to me I was thinking about all this stuff to keep from thinking about something else -- isn't that just what secret police are all about?]

31. (Tones)

32. Kid A (acoustic) // John Mayer
[i slip away, i slipped on a little while lie. we've got heads on sticks, we've got ventriloquists. standing in the shadows at the end of my bed. the rats and children follow me out of town; the rats and children follow me out of their homes. come on, kids.]

33. Movement IX - Faith // Jonathan Elias
[my unborn, forgive me. i only wish i had the strength to bring you into this world more faithful.]

Right-click, save as: 80.1 MB, 1:18:46 running time (with all tracks). I apologize in advance if you turn out to be one of the people who are creeped out by numbers stations and don't yet know it.
