....huh.

So, I've been tossing around five or six different ideas for a novel pitch, since I have determined that 2007 is going to be the Year of the Professional Sale and my attempt to do something short-storyish met with laughable failure. (I am a novelist. Seriously. Ten thousand words is a warmup, not a short story.) There's the Cop Procedural series, ( Read more... )

A published acquaintance of mine (Jim Butcher of "The Dresden Files") said that it helps to get a publisher interested if you have a possible series. Series mean a following and more sales for the publisher (and the writer, I presume).

You go, girl!

Oh yeah, that's totally why I was going for the cop procedural first, since it's an open-ended series (and not only has very strong tie-in value, but has lots of elements that are very hot on the market right now). But apparently this one wants to get written first. (Also, I want to postpone the procedural until I can get some research time in with the city police; The Girl has contacts there.)

Sci-fi! Is it going to be more of an Asimov-Heinlein-Dick sort of story, or something with more modern themes?

It's ... kind of like a Heinlein juvenile on crack, if Heinlein had any awareness at all of racial/ethnic/social/gender issues. It's The One About the dichotomy between "truth" and "lie", and also The One About the definition of "humanity" and how you can either find it, or find your way back to it after you think you've lost it.

Oh, that sounds amazing. I'm a big fan of "classic" sci-fi, and I'll be thrilled when this is complete!

I know you probably don't know much about my beta/editing skills, but whenever you get around to a draft or whatnot I'd be more than happy to add any input you'd like.

Sounds great!.. I'm joining the queue to read it, before or after publication, now. And I've read all the Heinlein juveniles more than once, and a lot more SF in that vein besides- this is core genre for me.

And as someone who's been trying for 2 years to sell a completed SF novel? Two goals. Finishing the novel and sending it out the first time is one goal. Completely within your control, ambitious yet eminently doable.

Actually selling it- if you do sell right away, that's fantastic. But if it takes a while- don't let that stop you from celebrating the finishing part.
