Kwanzaa was originally a harvest celebration back in some parts of Africa. Today it's a celebration of unity amongst family and community, so no religious overtones. And no, I don't know anybody who celebrates Kwanzaa.
And come on, nobody remembers yule because paganism's not a real religion :-P
right. cus it's not like christianity encorporated pagan holidays and traditions in order to make pagans convert faster. it's not like paganism is the basis for half the format of the christian religion. JUST BECAUSE WE DON'T LOVE JEEBUS, WE'RE NOT A RELIGION. WTF. i'm not even all pagan and it pisses me off. but then, since buddhism doesn't have jeebus it's not a real religion either, right? ::glowers:: this is why i tell people i'm unitarian universalist, because then they think i'm like them and i am free to do my rituals and chants and meditation in PEACE.
oh god, no, not directed at you at all! sorry! >__> the sarcasm was springing from my sensitivity at living with people who think my faith isn't real b/c it's not christianity. i'm sorry if i came across as hostile. :(
I know a few people who celebrate Kwaanza. Some of my mom's coworkers, for one. It's not particularly religious, though it cohabitates with other religions pretty easily.
There are cards and decorations for it sold in Hallmark, so enough people have to celebrate it for those to make a profit...
kwanzaa isn't a religious holiday. it's a cultural holiday, but since it's okay to validate african culture if you're a good christian, but not okay to validate nasty pagans and their heathen ways, they pretend like kwanzaa is a holiday like christmas and hanukkah, instead of maybe acknowledging the holiday that STARTED all winter holidays. JEEBUS PEOPLE.
i also almost wrote 'nasty pagans and their hedonist ways' ...cus, you know, that too. XD
Don't get me started on that "Jesus is the reason for the season," crap, either. Uh, no, guys, Mithras (or any of the other solistice-born sacrificed gods that pre-date Christianity) is the reason for the season, as well as the Roman holiday of Saturnalia, which was illegal not to celebrate in the early days of the Church. So the Christians just shrugged and said, "Right, so we'll just say Mithras Jesus was born around this time, and not get busted by the Romans for not partying while still being true to our religion."
Gotta give the early Xtians props for pragmatism, but it still doesn't make Jesus the reason for the season.
Now don't get me wrong, you all know I'm a pagan Jesus freak. But seriously, if Jesus was actually the reason for the season, the season would be in April.

Ok, well, maybe not. Because I like snarking occasionally and this seemed like a good topic.
But usually, yes, I do my own research.
