Chapter 1:
The photo op took longer than Jaejoong would have liked. He was standing beside his mother with his grandmother sitting in between them. He could hear the photographer clicking his camera continuously, the lights focusing on them, and the smile on Jaejoong’s face as stiff as ever.
His mother nudged him discretely with her foot. “Stop smiling if you can’t do it sincerely. The people would be able to see right through you.”
Sawada Megumi was the eldest daughter of the Royal Family. Jaejoong was five years old when his grandfather died and Megumi took over the throne. As the Queen, Megumi was well-loved by the people. Since Japan was a constitutional monarchy, the power to make policies and pass laws was vested in the Prime Minister and the members of the Diet. However, the Queen can reject any law that the Prime Minister and the members of the Diet may formulate, if she considered it unreasonable and unfair to the people. And as a ceremonial Head of State, the Queen had the responsibility to maintain good relations with other countries. She was also devoted to promoting the social and civic welfare of the people.
For as long as he could remember, it had always been just his mother and him - Jaejoong had never known his father. Megumi never spoke of him to Jaejoong and as years went by, Jaejoong had learned not to ask. Whenever the topic about his father came up, all Megumi would say was that his father was Korean and that was also the reason why she named him Jaejoong.
“I’m just doing what the photographer wanted,” Jaejoong said through gritted teeth. The photographer, which was chosen by the Royal Council, was renowned for taking pictures of non-living things. It was obvious too, from the way he told the Royal Family to just remain where they were and smile.
“Now you’re frowning.” Megumi scolded Jaejoong.
Jaejoong quirked his lips upward a little bit. “Would a smirk do, then?”
His grandmother shifted a little to the left side of her armchair to talk to them. “Stop bickering, you two. We still have a parade to go to and the sooner that this photo op is done, the better.”
Sawada Michiko was the Dowager Queen. She did not bore a son, but she had two daughters with the King, Megumi and Miyuki. By succession, it was the eldest Megumi, who was next in line. Jaejoong, as Megumi’s only son, would take over the throne right after. When she turned 21, Miyuki, Megumi’s younger sister, had gotten married to Yamashita Satoshi who was the son of a business tycoon. They had only one son, YamaPi. YamaPi was a year older than Jaejoong and the both of them had grown up in the confines of the Imperial Palace.
Unfortunately, the rules were much stricter to Jaejoong than it ever would be to YamaPi. It wasn’t YamaPi who would be King and at any rate, YamaPi would always remain a Prince. His cousin had the opportunity to go to a public high school - Jaejoong never had the chance. YamaPi, who was in his fourth year in university, was taking up Business Management and had the option to follow his father’s footsteps and take over the family business. Jaejoong, on the other hand, had no choice but to take whatever the Royal Council deemed it apt for him to take. As the next in line, Jaejoong’s every step was scrutinized and deliberated by the Council and they always expected him to be on his best behaviour. YamaPi did not have that kind of responsibility. But then, YamaPi had always been more laid-back and just went along with the flow. Unlike Jaejoong, his cousin could accept the restrictions imposed upon him and learned to do what was expected of him. All Jaejoong wanted was some breathing space.
“All done,” the photographer announced after almost an hour. He bowed gratefully. “Thank you for your cooperation.” The photo op was done every year, as a commemoration of some sort, for the Prince’s birthday. It was only limited to the Dowager Queen, the Queen, and the Crown Prince - extended family not included. It was kind of unfair, Jaejoong thought, how YamaPi, his Aunt Miyuki and his Uncle Satoshi could get away with these kind of stuff. The Yamashita branch of the Royal Family was more well-known in business, away from royalty and politics.
The parade that was to come after was a totally different thing, however. Each member was required to march out to the public and wave to the people, as a sign that the Royal Family was united and supportive of each other. The Royal Family had always been close-knit and Jaejoong personally believed that it was one of the facts that the Royal Council couldn’t find fault with.
By the time Jaejoong had changed into a traditional male kimono that was specifically designed for him, YamaPi was already waiting at their carriage, that was being pulled by two horses. As the two youngest, Crown Prince Jaejoong and Prince YamaPi were going to lead the parade. Right after them would be Princess Miyuki and Prince Satoshi, and the last was the Dowager Queen Michiko and Queen Megumi.
YamaPi was looking at his Blackberry. “Five minutes before the parade starts.” He was also wearing a blue kimono. YamaPi’s nickname came about during one parade when YamaPi was six and Jaejoong was five. YamaPi was forced into wearing a pink kimono because the fashion designer had wanted to experiment. YamaPi adamantly refused while Jaejoong ran around, yelling “Yamashita pink! Yamashita pink!” which was eventually shortened to YamaPi. The name had stuck since.
“Are we right on time?” The Queen had assigned YamaPi as Jaejoong’s assistant because YamaPi was the only one who could keep up with Jaejoong and his bouts of rebellion. Besides, Jaejoong always listened to YamaPi. Because of who they were, it had been difficult to make friends and know which person to trust - and as a result, YamaPi and Jaejoong had always stuck with and looked out for each other.
“Basically.” YamaPi placed the Blackberry inside his kimono as their carriage moved along. A crowd had already formed on the sidewalks outside the gates of the Imperial Palace, long fences serving as a barricade and guards scouting around, trying to keep every one safe.
Jaejoong and YamaPi smiled and waved to the crowd. There were a lot of girls who squealed in delight. The two had always made a striking pair, with their effeminate features and beautiful smooth complexion.
“What did you do with your free time?” YamaPi asked Jaejoong curiously. He had been surprised to see Jaejoong already dressed and made up for the photo op when YamaPi came back to pick him up.
“Ate breakfast, took a shower, and got dressed.” Jaejoong raised an eyebrow at him. “There really wasn’t anything much I could do in an hour.”
Anything that he would let YamaPi know, that is.

Every one in the Jung household was used to their Master coming home in the morning. Even before he became a lawyer, Yunho had always been a workaholic. He was the type of person who couldn’t sit still in one place and just wanted to always be on the move. His friends teased Yunho about being an overachiever, always wanting to do everything.
Shim Changmin took Yunho’s coat. “Yoochun finally convinced you to come home?”
“Locked me out of my own office and kicked me out.” Yunho grumbled. “If I was going to be treated this way, I probably shouldn’t have partnered with him.”
“If Yoochun, the pussy that he is, could kick your ass out that means you really needed to rest.”
Yunho laughed. “Smartass.” He had found Changmin on the streets three years ago - around the same time he formed the law firm with Yoochun - and took the kid in. Changmin had been 15 and Yunho had given him a place to call home. For that, Changmin was eternally grateful, and in exchange had taken to overseeing the Jung household. He was currently in his last year of high school and would also be taking up Law in college. Yunho, knowing how bright Changmin was, already planned to hire him in Jung, Park and Associates once Changmin graduates.
“The twins have been asking about you,” Changmin informed Yunho. “They were wondering why you haven’t been home for two days.”
“I’ll be the one to pick them up from school later.” Yunho decided before letting out a yawn. “Is the new nanny doing well?”
“The twins seem to like Yuri because she lets them do whatever they want. It’s a good thing the twins haven’t gotten into any serious trouble although there have been a few close calls. The staff, on the other hand, doesn’t get along with her. She orders every one around like she owns the place.” Changmin replied.
“Should I fire her?” Yunho said. Yuri had only been with them three days and Yunho hoped that she would stay longer than most of the nannies he had hired in the past. Ever since the twins came into Yunho’s custody a year ago, no nanny had lasted for more than two weeks.
“Not yet.” Changmin looked at him from head to toe. “Frankly, you don’t have the energy to hire anyone new right now.”
“I guess you’re right.” Yunho rubbed his eyes. “I’m going to sleep.” He didn’t realize how exhausted he was until he saw the staircase leading up to his room and could not find the energy to climb the steps.
“I’ll wake you up in four hours. Lunch would be ready by then.” With that, Changmin pushed him up on the stairs. Yunho had no choice but to follow along.

Nishikido Ryo spoke into his earpiece. “No suspicious people around. Left side clear.”
“The Royal Carriage is already turning around the corner and would be there in three minutes.” The head of security told Ryo.
“Roger.” Ryo murmured as he fingered something inside his pants pocket. Not for the first time, he wondered if he was going to do the right thing.
Ryo was 23 years old and a member of the Nishikido clan - one of the most influential families in Osaka and one of the most fiercely loyal to the Royal Family. In the olden days, the Nishikido clan was composed mainly of ninjas and samurais, who served as the King’s spies. Generations later, that role hasn’t changed one bit. After his training had been completed, Ryo had been assigned by his father to protect Crown Prince Jaejoong and Prince YamaPi. It wasn’t the easiest task in the world.
He, Jaejoong, and YamaPi had known each other since they were kids. Whenever the Nishikido clan came to Tokyo to visit the Royal Family, Ryo always played with Jaejoong and YamaPi and that had been the start of their friendship. When Jaejoong and YamaPi found out that Ryo would be their bodyguard, they couldn’t be happier. At least, with Ryo around, they knew that they would always be safe. Ryo would not do anything to hurt them.
The screams became louder and Ryo realized that the carriage had already appeared. Ryo could see Jaejoong and YamaPi, smiling and waving, as if they didn’t have a care in the world.
It was now or never. Without another thought, Ryo pulled out the smoke bomb and threw it in the direction of the Royal Carriage. In seconds, the carriage disappeared from view, smoke filling up the main road where the parade was being held. Immediately, ten guards surrounded the carriage while the rest tried to calm down the panicked crowd.
“Don’t move! We don’t want to have a stampede!” Ryo shouted to the crowd. He prevented a girl from going over the fence. By then, the people had started pushing and pulling, trying to see what was going on behind the smoke and it was only a short while before the people had broken down the barricade.
Amidst the confusion, Ryo saw Jaejoong slip out of the carriage, a handkerchief covering his face. He had removed his kimono and was now wearing a white shirt and torn jeans. Because people were running around the main road, it was easy for Jaejoong to blend in. Ryo watched as Jaejoong turned into an alleyway, the end of which would lead him to a quiet neighbourhood where a car was already waiting.
That evening, Crown Prince Jaejoong’s 21st birthday party did not push through. After the smoke had cleared, the Crown Prince had disappeared, only leaving behind the traditional kimono he had been wearing. The Royal Family had called in the help of the military and the police to look for Jaejoong. The Prime Minister and members of the Diet had been going in and out of the Imperial Palace, trying to find the best course of action.
No one suspected that Nishikido Ryo had something to do with it - that was the thing with being a Nishikido - nobody questioned their loyalty to the Royal Family in fear of getting their heads cut off.
Ryo supposed what he did made up for all the times he forgot to give Jaejoong a birthday present.

A/N: I know that the Japanese monarchy doesn't work the way I described it here, but for the benefit of this story, just supposed that the system is like that. ^^" Thank you.
