Three Wishes ~ A Ned/Chuck Fanmix
12 tracks + cover art and all that good stuff, under the cut.
Pushing Daisies took over my fandom headspace more than any other debut series this fall. And, fandom-wise, all roads have been leaning towards fanmixing of late. So! After only five wonderfully wonderful episodes, I've constructed this fanmix for the relationship between Ned and Chuck, as presented to us so far and stretching onward into what may (and most likely is) looming ahead.
I'm very happy with how the tone/arc of this mix turned out. PD has such a specific tone -- that sense of whimsy that's hard not to fall in love with, its fairytale charm, its earnestness and even innocence while at the same time addressing very dark and emotionally complex issues (death, the dangers of intimacy and of relationships, and, hell, of living in general) -- and I think I managed to capture that same vibe and address similar themes in the music and the lyrics themselves. It should follow a semi-defined arc, which I'll sketch out below, in case you're of the interested sort.
Enjoy. :)
Comments are shiny, especially if you snag.
01. Gris-Gris ~~ Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire
Tell me, why does the grass always seem greener
Gonna skip this town
And head on down to Louisiana
I'm gonna skip this town
And head on down, take my advice
This song's like a lost ship at sea
That's the same as wandering
02. Happy Phantom ~~ Tori Amos
And if I die today
I'll be the happy phantom
And I'll go chasing
The nuns out in the yard
And I'll run naked
Through the streets without my mask on
And I will never need
Umbrellas in the rain
I'll wake up in
Strawberry fields every day
03. X Is For Kisses ~~ Adem
Jars of kisses left on the mantle
next to orbs of peace and quiet
Reach out and save me
Every chance I'll fight
For feeling golden and hopeful
It might just be the key
To living my life nobly
Please come quickly
Rescue me with your soothing touch
04. Evergreen ~~ The Fiery Furnaces
I would tend to my bees
Sell honey on the road
Every fall in the wet
Watching lorries take their load...
I was casting my line
Angling way the day
The stream was swift it was clear
But the light was getting grey
05. The Cemetery ~~ Architecture in Helsinki
Everyone you forgot
Everything that you need
Everybody's gonna make it to the cemetery
There's a shadow on the wall
And it's nine feet tall
And our hearts won't sink
Cause it's obviously nothing at all
06. Three Wishes ~~ The Pierces
We'd be so less fragile
If we were made from metal
And our hearts from iron
And our minds from steel
And if we build an armor
For our tender bodies
Could we love each other
Would we strive to feel
07. New Rubbers ~~ Psapp
Come now, come and mourn me
It's so easy
Now I'm gone
My old bones are growing new bones
All the moments that you send
Do not fret because I won't come back
I know my place
And it's not here
08. Peach Moon ~~ The Unicorns
Why is it that lightning strikes
So perfectly at night
What you do is what you choose
But consider consequences when you lose
I don't care
09. Four Left Feet ~~ The Ditty Bops
Floating on tip toes
No tulips beneath us
Just a cactus or two
I can't feel a thing
Like a puzzle with pieces
That don't fit together
We used glue
And the picture dried clear
10. Child-Heart Losers ~~ Sunset Rubdown
There's a child heart in the child
Living wild
Fire makes it go
Where'd you learn to stage dive with such grace
Indescribable face
What do you stay beautiful for
11. Waiting To Know You ~~ The Fiery Furnaces
I'm waiting to know you far away
Flashlight the cave
Listen short-wave
I'm waiting to know you far away
Dredge up the lake
All the trees shake
12. Scenic World ~~ Beirut
The lights go on
The lights go off
When things don't feel right
I lie down like a tired dog
Licking his wounds in the shade
When I feel alive
I try to imagine a careless life
A scenic world where the sunsets are all
Breathtaking

MediaFire At the start: Chuck, and even Ned's, individual flights from Coeur d'Coeurs (Gris-Gris), Chuck's death and her subsequent new lease on life (Happy Phantom, and a flashback to her past in Evergreen), Prince Charming Ned and his decision to keep her and not kiss her, and his reasons for doing so (X is for Kisses), and that big old looming Issue of Issues, the D-word, as Ned and Chuck think of the past and present, and not so much of the future (The Cemetery). Mostly all upbeat in tone, before we get to the woebegone middle section, which brings their more pressing problems closer to the surface (Three Wishes), and has Chuck really starting to question the reality of her relationship with Ned, including the potential realization of what Ned did to her father (however unknowingly) (New Rubbers). Ned has his own ghosts and his own secrets, and has to live with the consequences of all of his decisions, especially one in particular (Peach Moon). And now, ye gentle listeners, we're at the last section of the mix, where despite all their normal people problems combined with the Pretty Big Obstacle, things just might turn out on the hopeful side for The Piemaker and his Sleeping Beauty; the awkwardness of trying to make things work (Four Left Feet), a recognition of young Ned and the girl next door, their shared past and their potential future (Child-Heart Losers), second chances and making up for lost time, their desire to know everything they can about each other (Waiting To Know You), and ending on a hopeful note for the future (Scenic World).
