Arthur C. Clarke is a larger-than-life hero to me. In some strange way, he was not unlike a surrogate literary father I had never met. I owe much of my formative years to three people: My father, Gary Gygax, and Clarke. If my dad dies anytime soon, I'll totally freak out! Sure, there are others who helped shape and temper my imagination into a ( Read more... )

Hey, weren't you interested in some D&D rpg action played online? I have a Wilderlands game in mind, and I may be doing the test run this weekend with a couple other friends. Ff you're interested, let me know so we can throw you in when we get started in earnest. :)

Right now I'm thinking of using openRPG, since its free. If everyone gets Fantasy Grounds, which costs like 20 bucks, then we will live La Vita Dorka to the max. But OpenRPG is cool, too (for dice rolls, sharing maps, stats, etc etc). For communication we'll use Skype. This way the game runs smoother, with notes and certain things being typed. Since it will be 3-4 of us, then I see it running rather smoothly. Are you familiar with the Wilderlands of High Fantasy?

Sweet. I'll be posting specific details soon. But the gist is as soon as I get into Seattle that Friday in May for ECCC, I'll head straight there. Hopefully some friends will be there. And there will be beer. ECCC just isn't the same unless I have a mild hangover (which I try to cure with KFC in the morning... uhhh...).

Timothy Olyphant reminds me of a serious Bill Paxton... Same facial expressions (and some features) and tone of voice.

A young Clint Eastwood? Apparently the Canada is getting to your brain.

Sure, his mannerism are quite similar. It may be intentional, too. Mainly in Deadwood and Hitman. He has his own style, sure. But I can totally see him as Dirty Harry. he reminds me of a young Eastwood-- he isn't Eastwood, though. That's impossible. Clint Eastwood is one of the greatest human beings who has ever lived.

If he's even human!

I can see the Paxton comparison. Kinda like Paxton meets Biehn with some Eastwood thrown in.

I still haven't read Fahrenheit 451. Out a score of 10, it deserves a . . .?

11.

It's truly one of the best books ever written. With that in mind, you might pick out it's flaws more-- as it's dated. But It really is one of the best SF social commentaries / possibilities I've ever read. Some of the stuff is quaint, and some of it will make you look around and go "yeah, he called that one".

But yeah, I cannot see how it would rate less than 8/10 on anyone's scale. :)

Based on what I've heard, that sounds about right. And hey, I read Brave New World only a year or two ago, and have been reading the Foundation books lately, so I've got no problem with dated predictions. In fact, I think all those dated predictions of the future. Is the Jetsons still not one of the most entertaining Hanna Barbara productions?

Most people don't know that his actual middle name is "Win". That's right, in proper circles he is known as Emilio Win Estevez. He almost took the stage name Frank Thomas Winslow Sheen, but his father recommended he go with Emilio Estevez, which means "Man who wins and wins a lot and kills rabid lions with his bare hands" in Spanish.
