Tomorrow is another day

Today was One of Those Days. We need groceries, so my lunch was walnuts, cashews, half a red pepper, and a cheese string; a button fell off my blouse and I had to fix it with a tiny binder clip; my EPUB file wouldn't validate; the nice sandals I haven't worn since last summer gave me pinkie-toe blisters; there was work tsuris; due to an unfortunate ( Read more... )

Aaargh!

my EPUB file wouldn't validate

My experience is that epubs are extremely fickle and that a slight typo or a trailing space behind the closing paragraph mark can invalidate them. I spent many hours making changes, validating, finding it didn't, and redoing my changes from a clean file, so I know how frustrating this one can be.

On top of everything else... yikes. I hope that tomorrow is better and that the dress rehersal thing means that the concert will go well.

So I figured out why it wouldn't validate: there are hrefs to ISSNs that don't actually go anywhere, so it thinks they're local and is upset that it can't find them. Or something like that. In other words, annoying but probably not detrimental (or even noticeable) to the end user. But annoying, and I don't know (a) how to fix it or (b) whether it even matters whether or not I fix it.

The rehearsal itself was actually fine; I just really hate arriving late for things like that, especially when I arrive both late and REALLY SWEATY from hurrying like mad to get there on time...

My policy is to fix all errors in case they mask another; if the links are blind you could just take out the link part. (If you want me to have a quick look, I'll be happy to).

Most erreaders/ereading apps will display happily a whole range of epub files, but you never know which bit will break which reader.

That's a good policy.

I'm having some people look at it now, including the guy who wrote the XSLT. The idea is that regular people such as myself are supposed to be able to make EPUB that works, whether or not we really understand the back end, but ...

Wow! What a cheese string of misadventure! I hope tomorrow is better and you find some substitute pants!

I did in fact find some substitute pants -- they are for persons of regular height and therefore way too long, but they were on sale really cheap, and now I have them at the back of my closet should I ever need them again!

Hee, how short are you? I really appreciate shorter length options when they're available.

I'm not actually that short ... I'm almost 5'4". But I have short little legs (I'm mostly torso).
