Can I just say, my current music is the Sugarcubes too? I saw the title and had to go to youtube to cue up the song (I don't have a copy - it's been years since I heard it) - reading this with it playing kinda gave me goosebumps, man. The kind of discordant sweetness and fucked-uppedness of it ( ... )

Yay! I'm so glad you liked it, my mind started whirring as soon as I saw your cool prompt. And the Sugarcubes, that song is so gorgeous and messed up, I thought it fit what I was going for.

I was a little worried about the sparseness, but I started to write a more traditional story and it didn't work until I started stripping words away :)

ETA: I always knew this song was disturbing but I really studied the lyrics when I was writing this fic and holy crap. Now I'm trying to remember a short story I read years ago that used birds as some kind of symbol for sexual violence, but I've read so many creepy short stories, I'm afraid it's lost to me.

Anyway, I actually edited to mention that if you want to rob this song of it's creepy hypnotic power, just picture me trying to sing along with Bjork. I sound like a cross between a dying goose and a drunken donkey :D

I absolutely loathe Bella, but this is a wonderful fic.

That was awesome. I love it when someone takes a sympathetic look inside the villain's head, and what you did here with Bela was so good.

I can believe that this girl in your story was the starting point of the Bela I've seen in canon, her soft side and her role as a victim of a crossroad deal just as much as her determination and strong sense of survival.

Thank you! I wasn't generally a fan of her actions on the show, but then her last episode turned everything on it's ear. Plus her deal always did strike me as unfair, like some kind of demon entrapment.

It was interesting to imagine the evolution of her character. In 500 words or less :)

Thank you so much! It was interesting to imagine how she got from the sad girl in the flashbacks to the woman we saw on the show.

Tragically gorgeous fleshing out of Bela's character--doubly impressive that it is in only 500 words!
