Didn't see comment tab on pinkraygun and if I would have, I wouldn't want to set up account if it was necessary to comment. ;)
Just wanted you to know I enjoyed your article. Stumbled upon is how I explain joining fandom, and I write because it's an outlet. I don't complain about his football watching/ fantasy football league and he doesn't complain about my fanfic writing/reading. It's fun, it's a hobby, it's stress relieving.
Looking forward to part 2.

You certainly don't have to set up an account to comment on pinkraygun, but I'm just as pleased that you stopped by my lj. : D

I'm glad you enjoyed the article, thank you for saying so! It was fun to work on. And yeah, fan fic is so fun, so engaging, it's hard to imagine being without it at this point.

Till next Tuesday!

I've read your article and now I am puzzled. Baffled. Not at you but at the attitude of people you talk about whose only criterion for doing something seems to be whether you make money by it. Um - can't you counter them by asking why they still insist on having sex with their boyfriend/ girlfriend/ husband/wife - because they shouldn't give sex away for free - there is such a lot of money to be earned
Seriously: you may be the best writer in the world - even then it takes a lot of (free)time to get to know potential publishers, get an agent etc. etc. which has nothing to do with the fun of writing itself and still takes away your free time. So - it's not a question of writing 2 hours and get paid for it or 2 hours and get no payment! It's.... I can't even....

It's a good question, and yes you could counter with the whole sex for money thing, but then that equates writing fan fiction with prostitution, which is not exactly the direction I'd want to go. : D

But yes, I've tried saying, "hey, you spend all that money and time on football (or stamps or barrel racing, insert favorite activity of the other person at this point), and they'll sputter and say something about the fact that what you love to do is based on a TV show. (Or a movie or a band or something...) and you can't win for wasting your breath. They'll never see the similarities there. Plus, to them, writing should be something that earns you MONEY, and in a lot of people's mind's, that's what counts. But how enjoying football and memorizing stats is really all that different than memorizing an episode of Due South, I'll never understand it myself.
