I Want to Be Roger Ebert When I Grow Up

One of the things I do every week is I read Roger Ebert and his movie reviews. I read pretty much everything he writes. Some of it I skim, if I’m in a hurry or if it’s about politics, which I find a little dreary. Most of the time I read all of his movie reviews, and then his blog, and I read the articles done by other reviewers on his blog, ( Read more... )

I am clapping over here :)

And the reader vs commenter numbers are something I struggle with both in my own blog writing and my work blogging. Perhaps it makes a passivity of online users. I'm guilty of it myself many times, where I'll just take in knowledge without contributing back to the dialogue. Or I'll say "oh, I'll come back to that and comment when I have time" yet time never seems to turn up and then it's too late.

Also there is no true predicting what will get comments and what won't. You can write something every single day, with depth and knowledge, but only get a few comments. Whereas, you dash off something at the end of the day and it may get a ton of comments. There's no guessing how the numbers will end up, but you just keep at it and the readership will sustain (and hopefully grow). It's been my philosophy so far.

Hey, great!

The thing about readers is that while the comments are marvelous and I always want more, what I really enjoy is seeing how the conversations start between the readers (where they're talking to each other, rather than to me), and the conversation takes a whole different direction that I could never have predicted. That's what keeps it fresh for me.

And yes, you never, ever know! I like to make bets with my sister that thus-and-such comment will be the one that gets the conversation going. But I'm always wrong. : D

I like your philosophy, and it's nice to know my struggles are not unique, so thanks for that.

I also like your icon! (Of course!)
