It reminds me of the time my one other expat-kama'aina friend and I took a coworker shopping at the one little Japanese grocery store in the region. After examing all sorts of random stuff -- instant noodles and arare and curry roux and dashi and such -- the boy scratched his head and asked if there was ANYTHING in the way of Japanese snack/convenience food that wasn't full of sugar, salt, or both. We just sort of stared blankly at him for a moment, both being the sorts who will drink shoyu by the shot glass when in need of a salt fix, and both being fond of all those little Japanese hard candies that are essentially sugar-flavored sugar with a little sugar on top as a garnish. "Um...maybe some loose tea?"
(YES I MARINATE MY SPAM IN A SATO-SHOYU SAUCE, DOESN'T EVERYONE? IT'S NOT SWEET AND SALTY ENOUGH OTHERWISE!)
