Dear Lord in Heaven, I thank thee ON MY KNEES that I have finally found the HOLY GRAIL of my palate - GOOD KIMCHEE!  *spazzes*

Seriously, tho, people - if you think I'm exaggerating, you don't know what it's like to be suddenly deprived of your favorite food, and when you go looking for it, finding only things that share the name and the appearance ( Read more... )

rant, personal

I'm with you. I miss food so much too. Glad for you.

In China it's all... fake western food. Mmm... crepes.

I always thought Japan would be more westernized than China though. Meh.

SWEET kimchee? Somehow I am not surprised, but, EWWW.

It reminds me of the time my one other expat-kama'aina friend and I took a coworker shopping at the one little Japanese grocery store in the region. After examing all sorts of random stuff -- instant noodles and arare and curry roux and dashi and such -- the boy scratched his head and asked if there was ANYTHING in the way of Japanese snack/convenience food that wasn't full of sugar, salt, or both. We just sort of stared blankly at him for a moment, both being the sorts who will drink shoyu by the shot glass when in need of a salt fix, and both being fond of all those little Japanese hard candies that are essentially sugar-flavored sugar with a little sugar on top as a garnish. "Um...maybe some loose tea?"

(YES I MARINATE MY SPAM IN A SATO-SHOYU SAUCE, DOESN'T EVERYONE? IT'S NOT SWEET AND SALTY ENOUGH OTHERWISE!)

I'm in japan, studying for my master in asia-pacific international cooperation. ^_^' I'm picking up Japanese as I go - the school's an international one, so all the master's classes are in English. I live in the dorms, which blocks chat.

History? Oooooooohhhhh, I envy you!! (*~*) If I thought I could get a government job with a history degree, I would have gone that way!
