I like Boneshaker, too, and the later ones. And, though I don't think Cherie Priest is quite as brilliant as the critics seem to think, it's an interesting world she's created.
And I quite like the Mary Russell stories. I just don't know why King made her so young -- if she were ten years older, it would make so much more sense (so I always think of her as ten years older). But, like you, I like the way King writes Holmes and his relationship with Mary, especially in the later books (I don't want to spoil you, so I won't say too much).
I read somewhere that ACD's Holmes retired at the same age Basil Rathbone was when he started playing Holmes, so I think of King's Holmes as Basil Rathbone (who was certainly still sharp, and didn't appear lacking in the virility department, either!).

Too late. I blame the Goodreads reviews. My hope is that King makes the progression believable.
