I know Clovelly Bay is a great place to go to start off snorkeling etc and there are quite ofen a few SCUBA divers there too so that would be where I would suggest.
Yes, I do a lot of diving in Sydney, mostly boat diving (because shore diving is something of a pain without a car). Are you looking at boat or shore diving or don't you care? I assume you're Open Water certified?
Good boat dives off Sydney that are not difficult and have things to see above 18m are: North and South Head (the Gap, Old Man's Hat, Flagstaff), Blue Fish Point (around the outside of North Head towards Manly), Magic Point (off Maroubra, there's a cave where endangered grey nurse sharks live at 16m).
I don't know so much about shore dives, but Clifton Gardens and Bare Island are meant to be good.
Have you dived at this latitude before or did you train in the tropics? I ask because I trained in Thailand and so Sydney was something of a shock. The visibility is much lower, and the water will be very cool now until summer: 15℃, 17℃ on a good day.
Wanting to give an experience type thing for a mates birthday. So we'll be flat out beginners.
Probably wont go until November /december. I need to save up. Most places charge on average $500? I have no reference for guaging reputaion or services offered so any reccomendations would be awesome thanks.
If it's just a one day "we want to go diving as an experience, get in the water as soon as possible and have a look around" you could do an "Discover Scuba", eg here. You actually want "Discover Scuba" itself rather than a try-dive, because the try-dive is in the pool. As you can see, it's $120. It's actually the first stage in a full certification if any of you want to move onto complete certification (which you will need if you intend to dive regularly).
If you all want to learn to dive properly, you need to do 'Open Water certification', which will take three or four days, and will cost somewhere between $300 and $500, closer to $500 if you want to dive off a boat during the course.

If the location (Manly) I linked to isn't convienient, check underwater.com.au's list of Sydney dive shops. Plunge's Discover Scuba might be another good place to do it, as they are right near Clifton Gardens.
