.031 Sunrise
Sydney Alexis

The pink highlighted lettering has long sense blurred. Legal jargon even less clear at this hour.

The freezer clicks into defrost at the same time a car door slams down the street both making her jump. Kneecap colliding with the minuscule dinette's table leg, she hisses in pain and rubs her hand across it.

The house was too fucking small for a proper den so she'd been making do with the kitchen table. Yet another compromise.

Sighing, she threw her reading glasses onto her law book and pressed her fingertips into her eyes until she saw stars.

The sunrise was coming; the barest hint of color was already lighting in the sky. Another night lost to studying.

In an hour, JR would be awake, crying to be fed and changed.

And she'd waked up Gus who would need breakfast, help getting dressed, his lunch made, and his school things packed.

Between the flurry of taking care of the kids, she'd see Lindsay whisking through the house, eating breakfast, leaving for work dressed in a smart suit, and living a life separate from her family's.

Melanie would watch Lindsay back out of the driveway offering a smile and a wave at her partner. As the car disappears down the street, Melanie will swallow down the hateful, irrationally jealous part of her mind that registers the fact that she and Lindsay have totally swapped lives.

Somewhere along the line she'd become the good little wife--a place she swore she'd never be. When had this become her life?
