.065 Passing
Angst warning.

The loose gutter rattled against the eave outside his window. Metal shaking against the rusted nails trying in vein to hold it into place. Fixing it had been on his 'honey-do' list for so long, it was written in permanent marker right after fixing the squeaky fifth step.

He couldn't bring himself to do either of those things now. Too tired to move and not just from taking care of Abigail. He was tired from falling apart and trying not to anymore. From putting on a strong front while her family and their friends shook his hand and offered kind words.

Kind words that could do shit all but make others feel better about themselves.

The truth was that he loved her more than anything else. Every time he closed his eyes, he could see her. He could recall every single detail--bright blonde hair, mischievous eyes, deep alto voice colored with her Kiwi accent--but he knew these precise details would fade with time.

Sometimes he wonders if she really existed. This passing light in his life with the bright smile and the rich laugh that made him feel an unfamiliar warmth inside him.

Of all the things in his life, Gus is sure of one thing though--Elizabeth was the best thing that ever happened to him.

Companion piece to Ends.
