Just keep working at it. Practice makes perfect. Try changing it up from thrusting to slashing. You need to be fluid when you shift from one attack to another.

These are the basic types of attacks that you need to master if you want to be able to use artes.

Of course it does. You just have to work at it. But once you master the basics, you still have to master the artes that you learn. It's always going to be a challenge to get better.
