It somewhat amuses me that Becks has now become a footballing national treasure who can do wrong, but I remember very well the days when he was Public Enemy No. 1 and Sun readers were hanging him in effigy and singing that they wished his kids died of cancer and other such delightful things, and the only ones who had his back were United supporters.
