I'm not familiar with what groups of soldiers fit certain purposes-- eg calvary, infantry, brigade. Well, I'm familiar with those terms, but I have a feeling that for the most part I'm completely ignorant. Does anyone know where I can find a great big glossary on the internet somewhere to enlighten me? Sorry to bother you ladies but my google-fu is ( Read more... )

Brigade is essentially a size of unit. Here's a guide to things like that, bearing in mind that some terms are modern.

I would just stick with infantry = foot, cavalry = mounted for the type of unit, although if you want to go further than that, you can divide them into light and heavy, based on their armor. Oh, and there's also archery units, including horse archers. There's wikipedia articles on each of those types of units. Ooo, Medieval horses! (When it comes to horses, I'm still ten years old inside.)

Also, here is the list of some links.

Well, this may not help you that much but here's the wiki page for more modern terms and definitions:

Military Oragnization

But if you're looking for terms a little bit closer to what might be found in the Dragon Age universe you might want to look more towards Military history.

It depends on what era. Brigade, for instance, is a modern warfare term, not used in the Middle Ages at all. The Contsmine book recommended above is pretty good, but a bit old,. Try Maurice Keen (ed) Medieval Warfare for a more updated outlook and a lot of info on the subjects you asked for.

Yep, that one. Helped me a lot when I made my first forays into medieval warfare, I could keep up with my fiance.
