a couple birds built a nest on the side of my house.
the baby birds sat inside all day, while the mother and father sat on the fence or hopped around my backyard.
black and brown, orange-chested
beautiful

earlier this week, the nest fell apart a bit.
the birds are gone now;
i think they finally learned to fly.

There were baby robins outside my house a couple of weeks back.
I saw one of the four fly out. The first one.
Then, a couple of hours later, they all found their way out (I didn't see them come out), except for one. I think he was scared. And he just stayed there all day, just waiting.

And then the most beautiful thing happened. The mother bird was there, and she was a couple of feet away, on a fence, chirping--singing to her last baby, trying to woo it to come out. She sung so softly, and so gently; I felt myself get the chills. The baby perked its head up, listening, but he wouldn't come out. He was too scared. And I know he wanted to--gosh, I do. But he just couldn't let himself.

I didn't see him fly out, but the next morning the nest was on the ground. There was no bird, no feathers. Just a nest. And I hope that baby bird makes it. How I hope he makes it.
