Jason had been under the impression that getting home from patrol at almost six in the morning, just before it started getting light out, would mean Mia would be asleep. She had declined coming out with him saying things like she didn’t feel like it, she wasn’t his partner, and she just wasn’t ready yet.
Whatever that was fine. But whenever he got home she was sitting in the kitchen drinking coffee. And he knew she didn’t wake up that early so he figured she had been up all night.
It had been a week and he still found her sitting at the kitchen table in her pajamas, knees pulled up to her chest, drinking coffee. He went upstairs to take a shower and came back down again wondering if she had even moved an inch. He sat down across from her at the small table and she looked up at him.
“Have fun?”
“Loads.” Jason said and eyed her for a moment. “Did you sleep?”
“Did you?” Mia shot back at him raising her eyebrows. “No, I didn’t. I’m not tired.” He sent her a disbelieving look and she stared back at him. “I can’t sleep, ok?” She said and he frowned at her.
“Maybe if you stopped drinking coffee you’d be able to sleep.”
“That isn’t even the problem.” Mia said and paused for a moment shrugging her shoulders. “You know, nightmares.” She said and Jason nodded his head slowly.
Yeah, he knew, nightmares alright. “About what?”
Mia sat there in silence for a while and shrugged. “About things I did.”
“Killing that guy?”
She nodded and they both were silent again.
“You shouldn’t feel bad about it. You did the right thing.”
“Oh my god, shut up.” Mia said glaring at him. “Stop telling me that like I need validation. Especially from you. Like I even care what you think.” He frowned at her and she shook her head. “You don’t get it, Jason. I’m not here because I agree with what you do, or because I’m planning on doing it. That’s… I don’t need you to tell me what I did was right. Archers we… don’t have the same views on killing as you Bats do. We never have. I just… I’m here because this time it was different. I did it and it wasn’t because I had to, it wasn’t because it was a last resort, it was because I wanted to. After seeing what that guy did to those children for no reason? I couldn’t handle it and I know it was wrong.”
“… That doesn’t explain why you’re here.” Jason said slowly.
Mia took a breath and thought to herself for a few moments. “Because… you can’t judge me for what I did.” She leaned back in the chair and put her legs down. “I know eventually I’ll have to go back. Eventually I’ll have to deal with it. With them… I just… not right now.”
Jason frowned at her and narrowed his eyes slightly. “So you’re going to leave?”
“You didn’t think I was going to stay did you?” Mia asked. “Why would I do that? This is fine for now but… we’re not friends, Jason. I don‘t belong here.” She shook her head and got up putting her cup in the sink and walking towards the door pausing for a minute. “I mean it’s not like you want me to even be here, right?” She shrugged when he didn’t answer and left him in the room.

It was a few hours later when Mia woke up from the nap she had decided to take because she heard someone come into her room. She opened her eyes and looked up at Jason. “I don’t just walk into your room.” She shot at him and glared though she sat up and threw the tangled blankets off of herself. “What?”
“I just want you to know you’re wrong.”
“Thanks for waking me up for that.”
“No, Mia you need to hear this.” Jason said. She let out a sigh and moved over slightly as Jason sat on the edge of the bed. “You do belong here.”
Mia rolled her eyes. “Didn’t we go over this when we first met. How we’re so much alike and I should stick with you because of that or some sort of bull shit like that? Because Oliver just can’t understand me or something, because Bruce is a dick so Ollie is too. That’s not even-”
“Would you shut up?” Jason said and Mia glared at him. “I’m not talking about that. It has nothing to do with how I feel about Oliver or anything like that. I know I was wrong before, I know he cares about you. But there is a difference between caring and understanding someone. You should stay here because I do understand. I get not being able to sleep… and the nightmares.”
Mia furrowed her eyebrows and looked over at Jason for a moment and frowned. “Jason-”
“There is a difference between understanding and caring. But despite what you think I actually do--”
Jason was silenced when Mia leaned over and pressed her lips to his with a fierceness that made her wonder in the back of her mind if that was actually going to leave a bruise. Whatever. She didn’t care, especially not when Jason started kissing back with the same ferocity and grabbed her waist pulling her onto his lap. Mia grasped his shoulders and pushed him down onto the bed coming up for air a few long moments later.
“So does this mean you’re staying?” Jason asked with a knowing smirk on his face.
Mia looked at him, still slightly breathless and flushed. “Fuck you.” She said reaching up and grabbing his chin pulling his face to hers, kissing him again.
