Possible misogyny in anti-Twilight discourse?

So a short time ago I was reading this article about something completely unrelated, but one of the things the writer commented on in passing was that Twilight comes under fire a lot simply for being a book for girls. One of the people in the comments put in, quite sensibly, that a lot of people who don't like Twilight are offended by its ( Read more... )

I've mostly only heard people compare Twilight to Hellsing in totally joking ways, but I think you have a great point. There is undeniably misogyny in a lot of anti-Twilight rhetoric. Yes, Twilight has some messed up messages from what I understand but that doesn't mean the "it's a girl thing" part is OK.

(Also if people seriously think that Hellsing has great messages in it, as opposed to maybe just having more badass vampires, they haven't really analyzed Hellsing. Sure I love the female characters in it but it's not exactly a tale of female power and agency all the same.)

Yeah, actually I don't think anyone's talked about how "Hellsing" is superior because it has better messages per se, I just know that people like it because its women are so capable and badass (to the point Integra's become almost the poster child for powerful women in anime).

Right, it definitely has badass and capable women. But still if you take it apart, like you said, it definitely shows that a man wrote it.

(Integra is great but it kind of freaks me out when people say stuff like "I hate all anime women except for Integra Hellsing." I never know what to say to that.)
