So my rent increase is only $20 so I'm staying where I am for now.  I love having Safeway across the street, Whole Foods (and pub and wine) three blocks away, and a ten minute (fifteen if I'm feeling lazy) walk to the metro

Actually, if you have even rudimentary carpentry skills and access to the necessary equipment, you could make your own bookshelves over the weekend and spend probably a fifth as much: http://www.diynetwork.com/search/results.do?diySearchString=bookshelves&diySearchType=diynetwork.com

As far as stabilizing shelving units to a wall, there are special screws available that go in smooth but then have little "arms" that pop out once another screw is inserted inside it -- think of an arrowhead.

They would be freestanding shelves--dividing the room. And...I would need Laura's help since I have no carpentry tools. I'll think on it though. I do plan to make the couch thing myself.
