So my rent increase is only $20 so I'm staying where I am for now.  I love having Safeway across the street, Whole Foods (and pub and wine) three blocks away, and a ten minute (fifteen if I'm feeling lazy) walk to the metro ( Read more... )

Actually, if you have even rudimentary carpentry skills and access to the necessary equipment, you could make your own bookshelves over the weekend and spend probably a fifth as much: http://www.diynetwork.com/search/results.do?diySearchString=bookshelves&diySearchType=diynetwork.com

As far as stabilizing shelving units to a wall, there are special screws available that go in smooth but then have little "arms" that pop out once another screw is inserted inside it -- think of an arrowhead.

They would be freestanding shelves--dividing the room. And...I would need Laura's help since I have no carpentry tools. I'll think on it though. I do plan to make the couch thing myself.
