It could always be worse. (A twisted sort of optimism, that I think there's a Jewish folktale about.)

From a fortune cookie: You may lose the small battles but win the big ones.

What else am I going to do (but keep on going)?
-as in, this sucks, but what can I do but try to handle it. short of suicide, continuing to deal with whatever changes come along is really the only choice. So, looking at what options I do have, since making it magically go away isn't something I've mastered yet.
-Pairs well with "Something will work out" (with the understanding that "something" may or may not be the most desirable option.)

Trying to find the humor in a bad situation. Or at least trying to remember that even if it sucks now, chances are it will make a funny story later.

"Other than that, everything's Fine!" - Grandpa, in a cheery voice, after a long string of complaints

Hey, I saw the universe sending you that fortune cookie message the second time around ::grin::

"It could always be worse. (A twisted sort of optimism, that I think there's a Jewish folktale about.)"

That DOES sound quite Jewish... like something my father would say.

my favorite one is "hard things are hard." By which I mean that it's okay if it feels hard. It's a hard thing. This doesn't mean we're defective or that it's hopeless and we should give up and go eat Cheetos. It's normal for hard things to be hard, and that this is probably good news (if it's not hard, it means someone no longer gives a shit).

I've got a few. margoeve September 13 2007, 04:14:49 UTC
"The point of a journey is NOT to arrive... Anything can happen." From Rush's song Prime Mover pretty much got me through much of my youth.

I often tell my students, "Context is EVERYTHING." Which I think applies to all those things you mention in that the world around us, and everything going on in it, influences us and how we choose to present ourselves. What works for one person won't work for another because their context is different.

Though you have this one, my mother would often tell me, "This too shall pass."

Only recently I've learned that, "You can't NOT feel emotions." It's biologically impossible and trying to not feel something only makes it unmanagable. "The key is learning how not to react based on them."

I'm pretty sure I've got more. But I'm brain fried from getting ready for camp. See you there!

"The key is learning how not to react based on them."

Amen to that. Working on that one every single day.

"Enough with the meta-emotional crap."

Helps me stop analyzing my feelings to death, and just letting them be emotions, rather then delving too deeply into the how and why and "should or shouldn't I feel this way" of it all.

The class loved "meta-emotional" - thanks for introducing me to that language!
