Sharp as a razor

I’m something of a razor whore. I’ll admit it. It started with the first razor my dad bought for me and went downhill from there. The Excel, Stealth, Stealth 2: son of Stealth - I’ve got ‘em. It all stems from the fact that my face actively dissuades shaving. I’ve got really coarse hair which renders even the best electric shavers to nothing more ( Read more... )

I love my 3 blade Original Venus razor. I don't ever wanna switch. I do need a new electric razor tho, as when things get lazy in the leg shaving arena it is a pain in the ass to shave with a blade. Like this morning. Having an electric for a pre-shave helps a lot.

I used to (in my pre-Mach 3 days) pre-shave with a shitty electric, but I found no need (read: no reduction in face-friction) once I tried the three blade beauty.
But this last weekend in LA with Anna's 'rents, I shaved with her dad's top-of-the-line electric shaver expecting it to reveal that electric shavers CAN be as good as a blade. Eh. I was unimpressed. That's when he said, "Well, once you've been using it for a few weeks and the scarring from blade shaving has healed..." Hold it right there. That's why I use high-quality razors, to AVOID scarring. Take your buzzing beast elsewhere, I'll go back to the Mach 3 once I'm out of razors for the Fusion. :)

Bruce Baum had a routine years ago about a new razor blade. It had SIX blades. The first one lifted a little. The second one lifted a little more...then the third...the fifth one actually ripped the hair out by the root. The six wasn't actually a blade, but was a roll of toilet paper. Sounds like you're one step away from his product. :-)

I've been using a Gillette Atra (two blade) for...hm...most of my shaving life. It was always okay and cheap at Costco. Then the Mach 3 came out and Costco dropped it. I probably would have gotten a Mach 3 except that about that time, they did something to the Atra to make it about ten times better. Smoother to use, but it still actually removed hair. Dunno what they did, but it worked. But your description of the Mach 3 sounds intriguing...I may have to give it a try...

I'm dissapointed that you wrote this without listening to "Sharp as a Razor" by U-Roy...;)

I'm with you, buddy. The Mach 3 (I buy the Turbo heads, because they're extra-smooth) has been my blade of choice. I use the Norelco for my head - it did a shitty job on my face hairs, and gave me zits besides when I tried it on my face.

The real success for me was finding Zirh Shave Gel, which a) helps me see the hairs I'm trying to cut and b) is ultra-smooth and leaves me with no razor burn or acne. It's pretty expensive, but it's the best shave gel I've ever found. Thanks, Queer Eye!

Oh, and don't get the Zirh shaving *cream*, whatever you do. It has some sort of component that burns with the harsh fire of a thousand alien suns.

I've suspected that whenever The Bottom Line[tm] doesn't look adequately spiffy for Gillette, they just call down to the lab and have them whip up some new goofy razor design. (I also suspect it's the same deal with Adobe and new versions of Photoshop, but that's a different story.)

Having said that, when it comes to facial-resurfacing, the tool of choice around my bathroom is the Mach3 Turbo - the real clincher-dincher for that particular model is the open-back, permitting speedy removal of waste whiskers, and the bottom-mounted handle receptacle, which provides for a much gentler stroke with less pesky nickage. I might pick up a M3Turbo handle one of these days - the vibration does help somewhat - but it's not exactly up there on the priority list. ;)
