Jenga mp3 CD
Version 6.0 - Updated 5/27/07
This is a work in progress, but the current edition of this disc contains 241 tracks, for a total running time of over nine hours. The disc is meant to be inserted into an mp3 capable playback device and played at random. The bulk of the content is film music (including a cue from my own film, Nocturno), although there are a few other interesting pieces, sound effects and the like. Many of them I had to edit, and some of them are from sources that are... uh... gray. Some are unsettling, some have sudden starts and stops, some are just weird sounding, and some are just “stingers”... but all of them, however, are cues that somehow will screw with you mind while you play the game.
The idea is to ratchet up the tension. The Jenga mp3 CD is not only more fun to play with, but it also happens to add a certain element of melodrama to the game, as people playing subconsciously begin to react in time to the music. Interestingly, this is the strongest case I could make for how effective music can be in setting a mood.
Of course, there is a lot of Bernard Herrmann on here, mostly from his Hitchcock collaborations, and there is quite a bit of Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams. I also found a few appropriate tracks from some strange sources, such as the (still unreleased) Airplane! score by Elmer Bernstein or Don Davis' music from Bound. John Barry is pretty prevalent as well, as his particular brand of tension, honed in the James Bond features (many of the cues by him are from this film series) perfectly fits the sweat beading on your forehead idea. Of course, that's only the beginning, and in a sense this particular work sort of justifies some of the stranger titles in my collection. There is a lot of music from low-budget horror films included, which makes sense, of course, but is very strange to hear a good context for.
The interest shown this disc is gratifying. Its two (regular audio CD) prototypes were in constant use when we'd play the game at work, and it is an element that friends of mine look forward to when playing. This is interesting because it is one of the few contexts in which I can share my admittedly unusual passion for film music with other friends.
I will offer this one self-congratulatory note. This is a pretty original concept if I do say so for myself. This is one thing that only I could have come up with. Seriously, who else in the galaxy would be this obsessive?
Here is what's on it, so far...
So, in diabolical order...
