Twofer!

To clarify: I have been sick for the past couple of days. It started out being a "sort of" sick and ended up blossoming into a "pretty sick" which became a "pretty damn sick." I'm feeling much better now, and I'm hoping to go back to work tomorrow morning more for the prospect of getting out of my damn apartment than for any warm fuzzies about ( Read more... )

I adore the Leone westerns. They are among my favorite movies! I'm not so used to tracking down obscure or re-released scores as you (and suspect you might already have links to them). Where can I get copies of the newer versions? I have the expanded version of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly from Buysoundtrax.com and am delighted that you included my favorite track from it: Padre Ramirez. I only have A Fistful of Dollars as MP3s.

Because of the myriad of different versions available, I know how difficult it is to determine which edition of each you should get. These are the optimal issues of each of these scores:

A Fistful of Dollars
17 tracks (different cover, but correct track listing)

Once Upon a Time in the West
27 tracks (expanded from previous expanded version with better sound - includes "Duello Ultimo" at long last)

Duck, You Sucker!
26 tracks (2 disc complete set, highly recommended, most of the really good stuff is on disc two)

I usually reserve my excitement for a new mix until after I read your liner notes. That's usually where it all comes together for me, and The Vise of Killing was no different. I'm only familiar with a few of the tracks on this compilation, but I could hear the strains from the orchestra pit just rising up and out as I was reading it. It sounds epic.

One of my new favorite past times is reading your notes on the tracks *as* I'm listening to it. It helps put a face to the name, so to speak, and flushes it with meaning. Its going to be like settling down with a good book, only the book will come alive in my hands and transport me. I will most certainly have to set aside a block of time for this one; locking myself away in my office in the wee hours of the morning, with the clarity of volume surrounding me.

Very exciting indeed.

Many of Morricone's scores for Leone's films have entered pop culture, although with the exception of the coyote-howl title music from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, usually without its original context. I think you'll recognize quite a lot more of the music on The Vice of Killing once you receive it.

Father To Son is a bit different from my usual fare being as that it is primarily a jazz album. It is more purely jazz than Just Talkin' About Shaft is R&B, as there are a few tracks on that disc that are definitely film music, albeit in the R&B idiom.
