Bring back Shirley Bassey, for heaven's sake.

You can hear "Another Way To Die," the new Bond theme song by Jack White and Alicia Keyes for the upcoming Quantum of Solace about 55 minutes into this BBC Radio 1 program. While I didn't have the same completely horrified reaction to it as many did, I don't exactly see how this works as a Bond theme. On the other hand, its edginess might work ( Read more... )

It's a pity that the title theme artist is seen as the one driving the sales of the soundtrack, and the Bond series is no exception. I remember reading about how Barry complained about the producers' obsession with coming up with a title theme hit as one of the things that alienated him. I'm going to hold off on listening to the title song until the release date approaches.

It just seems that there is more concern in getting names on the poster and a dubious single out there than there is getting a song that fits the film and works as a lead-in to the score.

Not everything can work out perfectly - Tina Turner doing a Bond song was a great idea, even if the results were a bit limp - but Shirley Bassey and James Bond is a tried and true combination, and she could belt the $#!+ out of a song and make it sound like it should.

While I have lamented the loss of John Barry from the franchise, I have to say that at least he went out on a high note. For my money, his score for The Living Daylights is his best work for Bond since the Connery days (the film itself is also, in my opinion, superior to most of the more cuddly Moore Bonds). And he got to bow at last.

I couldn't imagine that it would be that much of a stretch to get them to work together.
Beautiful logic. I think that would turn the current trend around 180-degrees, and breathe new life into the theme songs. Retro works. It would be an instant classic!

Don't get me wrong, I like "You Know My Name" (and I love how over the course of the score it gradually develops into the familiar James Bond theme), and I think that the initial plan the producers had was a bit more fitting. Unfortunately, Amy Winehouse is too much of a mess, even for 007.
