Ray's Last Stand

Released in 1981, Clash of the Titans was the final collaboration between Ray Harryhausen and producer Charles Schneer. The era of stop-motion animation was coming to a close, being replaced by more modern techniques as go-motion and animatronics. Harryhausen's effects were already an anachronism upon the release of this film, as is evidenced by ( Read more... )

The opening to Clash of the Titans is one of the few things I will drop everything for to watch. It scared me well past an age it should have and thrills me to this very day.

I love Laurence Rosenthal's Straussian score. A lot of that Sturm und Drang stuff I love.

I frequently throw Newton Howard's, Scott's, and Barry's scores together in a playlist and shuffle them. They work very very well together.

I'd add Steiner's of course if I had it.

The Stromberg/Morgan recording is now on the Naxos label at a significantly reduced price. It's worth it; the sound on the CD is thunderous, and the performance is balls to the wall. They also recorded Son of Kong along with another Cooper/Schoedsack production, Most Dangerous Game, which is a budget title as well.

I also have the Fred Steiner* recording, which is a very good performance, but the Stromberg/Morgan one bests it in sonics and content.

Every time I think how much I'd love to watch Clash of the Titans again, I remember how much the scene with the two giant arachnids-of-which-I-am-utterly-terrified used to scare the almighty crap out of me.

Oh, good heavens. I completely forgot about that scene!

Is that where the fear came from?

I don't think the fear originated from there (I'm sure I remember having it ever since I was a couple of years old), but it certainly didn't help.

Yikes.

Sorry, I didn't mean to bring up such a disturbing memory.

I guess I never really got too perturbed by the creatures that must not be named because we don't have them around here. The only ones I've ever seen were in zoos.
