I didn't even read this whole thing, because I'm so sick of the Elementary vs Sherlock bullcrap. I came to the site where you posted it, and saw the half crazy, OMG OTP ranting of some Sherlock fan who was all pissy because she didn't like what some Elementary fan said ( ... )

The truth is, counting three day DVR viewings, the season premiere of Elementary last week got the highest ratings the show has ever received. Check the ratings sites and you'll see I'm right. They reported a series HIGH after adding in the three day DVR ratings. And, while the DVR ratings may or may not be as important to the advertisers and the network (I have no idea if they are or not) the total viewers matter, I think, overall. I mean, the DVR should count, because those people are watching as well, just not live ( ... )

Which rating site do you frequent? I checked at TV by the numbers, and according to them, the ratings were the lowest so far...I think I checked before the DVR adjustments, though ( ... )

I don't know where you're lurking if you think it's Elementary fans starting any comparisons. The BBC Sherlock fans are awful as far as baiting and taunting the other fanbase. Before Elementary ever aired, a bunch of "obviously have never read a canon story in their lives" fifteen year old BC obsessed fan girls on YT were saying things like "this and that is STEALING" if Elementary does it, when they were talking about Sherlock things that were straight from ACD. It just escalated from there. *shrug* and the ONLY time I've really seen Elementary fans dig in their heels, is in response to the baiting. I think that fandom is perfectly fine with just loving the show and not caring what other fanbases think. But when you get called an idiot for liking something, especially by someone who watches the BBC version because they are in lust with BC, well, it grates ( ... )

As I mentioned beforehand: The Sherlock fans were suspicious of the CBS because they originally wanted to make a straightforward remake and when their idea was rejected and they instead did an own show, a lot of people were suspicious. They were also very bothered about sudden rumours (most likely launched by the CBS) that Sue Vertue would be involved in the project, which in turn lead to her denying it and making it very clear that they would act if it turned out that Elementary was a poorly disguised remake instead an own take. This on the other hand lead to the argument you keep repeating that the makers of Sherlock don't own the rights on Sherlock Holmes. Just that NOBODY ever claimed they did, neither them, nor the fans, the suspicion was from the get go about a remake of Sherlock, nobody cares if somebody makes another adaptation of Sherlock Holmes (in fact, there are currently multiple in the making). Congratulation, you fell for what the CBS so carefully engineered with the unprofessional conduct they showed ( ... )

Moffat reacted as if he DOES own the rights either to SH, or the modern version. That little bit has pretty much turned me off him. I get him possibly being put out that CBS went ahead with their plans ( ... )

Thank you for pretty much proving my point. I have been nothing but polite to you, and yet you have to make a personal attack about me "having no heart". All because I didn't cry at the BBC version of Reichenbach. All over a TELEVISION SHOW.You might just want to take a minute to remember that on the other side of the computer is a PERSON. :)

Really? You call that a personal attack? It was just a half-joking comment, which actually boiled down to "you are perhaps not invested enough". It is easy to keep the distance and not cry if you are not really into something.

I suspect you are another anonymous, and if I am right and you only came her to leave some vitriol, please leave. Either keep the discussion on topic or I will delete every further comment from you. My LJ is not your personal battle-ground.

I didn't say that Elementary did. But it was an understandable concern when CBS announced the show. When the pilot actually aired, at least this matter turned out to be an unfounded worry, and I think everyone, including the makers of Sherlock were relieved that the lawyers wouldn't be needed after all. Since then, the discussion has been about the quality of the show and not about it being a remake...in fact, most reviewers compare the show with House, Castle and The Mentalist by now. (It still rode on the coattails of Sherlock, which I wouldn't mind in itself, since there is always room for another adaptation...but for your information, the Sherlock project was in the making parallel to the first Sherlock Holmes movie. In fact, if the BBC had picked the first version of the pilot, it would have aired in fall 2009, while the movie aired in December 2009. It was only the decision to change the concept into 90 minute episodes which lead to Sherlock's premier being in summer 2010 instead...in fact I doubt that there has ever been a time ( ... )

Thank you! It is great that someone understood the point of the post. It is really not about the shows (though I naturally have an opinion about both of them), but about the mechanism behind this deliberately engineered fandom war. Especially the media was playing into this perfectly...I think I read somewhere that this war was the big that even the media reported on it, but I think it become so fierce and widespread BECAUSE the media keep bringing it up. I think in every single interview BC did before Elementary aired he was asked the question what he thinks about Miller taking the role ( ... )

No, it's truly okay...I'm actually very flattered that you consider this well written enough to share. And honestly, sooner or later more Elementary fans will stumble over this one either way and feel as offended as the anonymous above. It might be better to get all people who understand where I am coming from and those who don't understand at the same time ( ... )
