Movies/Books into Fanfic?

Apr 28, 2008 15:10

So lately I've been contemplating some things.

I wrote in a recent post that every time I see the previews for the Patrick Demsey movie "Made of Honor", I desperately want a Chloe/Oliver fic from that same premise. Where he's a playboy and she's a good, loyal best friend. When she leaves, he realizes he's in love with her and is about to tell her ( Read more... )

I've read one or two fandom stories, where i knew the plot was familiar but i didn't know from where.

It was when I got to the end it was revealed what movie it came from.

The thing was the author managed to keep the characters from the fandom true to themselves even though it was an AU.

I think that was what kept me going. That she didn't loose the 'people' we knew, she merely altered them just slightly due to certain minor changes.

I'm rambling but, my thing is as long as it doesn't change our fav people too much that we no longer recognize them, i'm cool with reading the 'insert-fandom- turned into -insert-movie- thing.

That's good ... I like that idea. I want to recognize my characters. It's cool when you slightly know but you can't place it and then you're like "OOOH ... DUH!" That's fun.

You're not rambling and yes, I know what you mean. I totally agree! I want people to alter the movie slightly to fit the characters, not the other way around.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone write a book or movie AU using a book or movie I like. The closest is crossbow1's CLex Romeo and Juliet fic.

Similarly, my fav movies wouldn't translate well into fic, I don't think. Not very easily, anyway.

It is hard to find a good one and I can imagine it's difficult to write.

A lot of movies wouldn't make good fics. In theory yes but in reality, it may be a lot more harder to work certain fandoms in.

Dude. I just finished your ficlet. O_O It came out ~900 words, and somehow became a reveal fic, in addition to your prompt! Will post it later. :p

First of all, AU is my favorite genre of fic because it's like discovering your favorite pairing all over again in new situations, and it never gets old. Sometimes the AU seems like its a fandom of its own if the story is well thought out. And obviously I've written (am writing) at least one AU based off of a movie, and I plan to do a couple more eventually, and there is definitely a book I would love to turn into another Clark/Bruce fic. I even find myself watching movies and thinking "Ooh, this would be a good slashy fic." I have no problem with the idea, especially if the writer actually really plans out the fic and the appropriate roles fit the characters that are being substituted. I say as long as it's not just re-telling the movie verbatim, scene for scene while just inserting this character into this role, then go for it.

They are rather fun, aren't they? Yeah, I know you're working on your Clark/Bruce AU. That's awesome.

Me too! Well, for me, it's both het and slash but I've really been doing it a lot lately.

That's very important to me. I want to recognize my characters. They should alter the plot to fit the characters we know, not alter the characters to fit the movie. :)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
