It's still alive. Nowadays, have to keep an eye out for Friendzys and check add_me and other active add communities to periodically pick up new friends.
As to where many are going: tumblr mainly because of the FREE accounts and FREE unlimited amount of pics and gifs a person can post. This is costing Yahoo a whole lot of money. Yahoo is mighty tired of little return from a major investment.
When Yahoo puts an end to the freeloading (paid accounts could happen) and allows ads (this has recently begun); mass exodus to other places (LJ being one of them).
In the meantime: What kind of dinosaur? I loved to see a feathered raptor. Anything colorful (sick of the gray/brown pachyderm scheme) too.
It's still a thing IMO. ^_^ Of course, I also have an account on Dreamwidth, anticipating the day when LJ goes totally toxic or dies. I've noticed that a lot of the folks I like here on LJ also post on Dreamwidth, so my idea is not unique.

I think it's still around because it offers things that its two competitors, Tumblr and Facebook, don't offer.
