Open Mindedness Dilemma

Dec 29, 2011 13:13

Open mindedness has always been a personality trait that I have valued in individuals.  In fact, I have taken pride in considering that I have that trait.  But it occurred to me that maybe I should more fully explore the possibility that my own open mindedness was merely a figment of my imagination due to the fact that I admire open minded persons ( Read more... )

I also scored a 72 on the "open-mindedness" test!

While I would hope that I could have an objective conversation with everyone I engage, if I cannot, I can accept that. However, I have a very hard time dealing with people who would presume to tell me what I should think without providing a logical, factual argument for doing so.

In my personal life, I have run into this primarily in the religious context. I will respect whatever anyone chooses to believe, but I expect the same courtesy. Often I do not get it.

I totally agree. All I ask is just "Give me a little respect". It is a form of dissing someone to not return their right to choose. I'm sure the religious zealots do not see it that way, but that is what it boils down to. I've thought of turning the tables on said individuals and answering in kind, but then I would not be true to myself by doing that.

There's nothing wrong with an 18 year old dating at 45 year old.

Hrm...I'm 42. Depends on how hot she was.

You could be friends with both a liberal Democrat and a conservative Republican.

I have found its they who have issues with being *my* friend!

Your exactly right about being "my" friend. The friendship would be successful as long as politics was not discussed.

Yes, the limiting exposure to people who just want to be contentious without facts is usually the best way. There was a columnist (psychologist) in the Las Vegas newspaper who wrote an article about how he has found that life is too short to spend it with "toxic" people. I've thought about that frequently. I'm also reminded of an old George Carlin skit where he was talking about tolerance. This line has stuck with me: "And if you don't want to be tolerant, we'll just take you outback and beat you up." Kind of gets right to the point.

80% - but I thought the questions overly simplistic and, as usual, too subjective. Regardless - LOVED the video. Finally got to finish the whole thing. I think I'll take the time to dictate it and post the verbiage as part of a written record. Along with my New Year's resolution post, it will make a fine reference.

Also - WELCOME TO LIVEJOURNAL!

Thanks for the welcome. Yes, I found the test a little brief and as you stated simplistic to really have much accuracy. Maybe I'll look down the line to see if there is a better one.
