(Oh dear, did we take TSB's name in vain during that discussion? I do like it, really, just not as much...)

Of course, pimp long and pimp hard! I'd really like to expand discussion beyond my own short list of acquaintances.

No ... as a matter of fact, it was conspicuous by its absence!

I was hoping to draw a response from fellow fans of TSB.

Awww, you know I liked it (and Justin and Flavian) too -- it's not in the short list of my absolute top favorites, but I can definitely see myself rereading that one much more often than some of the unhappier stories like The Lantern Bearers or Outcast. I just didn't connect to it as intensely as you, but I know I've seen a few other random reviews online that held it as a particular fave.

(Perhaps if you wrote it up, that'd help draw out more fans or interest other potential readers? *tempts*)

I think I'm a little bit fonder of Flavian than I am of Justin, but you know I tend to be especially weak for those Kenren-ish easy charmers; it might've been different if I'd first read it as a child myself. But the character who left the most vivid impression on me would have to be the formidable Great-Aunt Honoria...

Damn, I was looking forward to reading about Prosper and Cynan in Constantinople! Also, I want to find out what happens with Conn and Luned. (And I'm sorry for being late to the party, but I just read The Shining Company and practically every character made me cry.)

I can't believe these books are considered children's series. They're far better than most historicals written for adults.

A Shining Company enthusiast? carmarthen will be delighted to find a new recruit. There isn't much fanfic for it, but there was at least one this past Yuletide that addresses what happens to Prosper, Conn, and Luned.

It's really unfortunate that publishing categories ghettoize books as much as they promote them. Certainly Sutcliff's novels for children and for adults aren't significantly different (though the adult ones are, if anything, even bleaker.)
