Today, I was working with my first-grade class and they were using the writing prompt "I feel sad when..." in their journals. Expecting depression and dead pets, I was a tad miffed when I had the following conversation with a girl who normally gives me shit and is difficult to deal with. That wasn't even the worst part. The worst was when I related this story to my mentor teacher, who told me that the girl had once come back from a weekend and told her about spending hours in her mom's car because the mother had gone into a bar. Honestly, though, which is worse? Her being left in a car, or her having to drive home with her mom once her mom was bombed?
