So Tonight That I Might See; songs for Shosanna Dreyfus/Fredrick Zoller
The theme of this fanmix, I suppose you could say, is the final chapter of Inlgourious Basterds: Revenge of the Giant Face, in which Shosanna's grand scheme is carried out against the Nazi Hierarchy. Gloriously entertaining, it also contains my favorite scene out of the entire film:
The projection booth scene.
Every interaction between Shosanna Dreyfus and Fredrick Zoller, every moment of their dynamic, leads up to this scene. Their fates intertwine in both on the silver screen and off, in life and ultimately, in death.
Of course, Quentin Tarantino himself has his say about it all, which has been the most enabling and life-ruining positive influence:
"Because there was something about Zoller. He really liked her. Everything Zoller did that ended up fucking her up and putting her in this situation, he did with good intentions. His biggest crime was liking her. I think of that scene as a romantic scene. It's Romeo and Juliet. Those bullets? That's them consummating their relationship. In any other time in the 20th century, they could have been in love. Except for that one time."
With this fanmix, I wanted to capture that, of both their perspectives: of all that could lead Shosanna to sacrifice everything to end her pain, all of Fredrick's own glory and resulting trauma of the war, to all that brought Shosanna to gun him down, yet let down her own guard to reach out to him.
As the script states:
"The Face on the silver screen breaks the young girl's heart..."
