First off, I want to say how truly happy I am for you. You all seemed to have a great time, and that can only be a good thing. I did enjoy reading those insane taping reports over the past week.
And I'm really, really sorry that people have decided to rain on your parade, and choose this post to target as an example of everything that's wrong with the fandom. It's unfair to you, and it shouldn't have turned into this.
However... since everyone and their dog seems to want to weigh in, I'm going to state my opinion on this. Directed more to future Hobo Campers -- not to you specifically.
Stephen is to you guys what Jon Stewart is to me. And 5 years ago, I waited after a taping to meet Jon (outside that very same studio). At the time, people were not doing this -- as far as anyone online knew, anyway. It wasn't established when he would come out, or even where he would come out. I did this alone, and I did it without anyone else in the (small) fandom knowing about it beforehand

I don't think I'd wait for Jon, even if he still came out like Stephen does...
I wouldn't have the balls to. Jon makes himself as a real private person, and I honestly wouldn't want to invade that. Even at the TDS Q&A, I don't want to ask a question. Stephen just comes off as a not-so-private person that doesn't mind the attention. I guess that's why people think it's "OK" to wait for him and to talk to him. He gives off the vibe. People feed off of it, and give him love.
I'm pretty sure 99% of us know not to follow him down the street screaming, throwing clothes, or going over his house AKA David Letterman's stalker.
If push comes to shove, I'm sure security would bust heads if everything went out of control.

Yeah, that's another thing about Jon -- back then, nobody knew to what extent he was uncomfortable with meeting fans. We knew that he preferred to dodge crowds, but that was pretty much it. In the first few moments of our meeting, he seemed very awkward (as if he was expecting me to do something weird), but was fine after that... maybe I did a good job of establishing myself as pathetic and non-threatening. =)
If I knew then what we know now - to what extent he builds up protection around himself (both physically and otherwise) - I definitely wouldn't have waited for him. Which is part of the reason why I'm happy I did it when I did (ignorance is bliss?).
I agree that security wouldn't be afraid to step in if needed. Indeed, 99% of us know where to draw the line when it comes to "real-life" fandom stuff. I just don't want to see that other 1% have any influence -- and sadly, I think it already does.
I don't really know what happened but I blocked the person and there are no more anonymous posts allowed on my journal anymore. So hopefully that's the end of that.
He fell during the pre-show bit he does. The run around the studio thing. Fell right on his hand. What happens next is a story in itself but it's acushla's story and can be found at Colbert Nation.
