Earthquake?

Feb 27, 2008 01:01

Uurgh ... we just had another earth tremor/mini-earthquake in Birmingham - ever since the one that happened in Dudley that I felt some years ago, I was certain I'd experience it here again - about the same time of night too (Dudley one was just before 1am as well I seem to recall). My house tends to shake a bit anyway when heavy traffic goes past, ( Read more... )

yup - apparently it was 4.7 on the Richter Scale and the epicentre was around Hull. No reports of casualties or owt so far, but was a bit weird to be playing World of Warcraft and fighting Murmur (a big monster that does a sonic boom attack) when all of a sudden my monitor, desk, chair and flat generally shudders lol.

Quite shocked it was so widespread - and I felt too shaken up to go back to bed immediately, but I'm a bit more chilled now that there haven't been any secondary tremors, so going to try for some sleep in a bit. If that doesn't work, I'll be pushed into having a large glass of Amaretto!

Heh do you think "sorry I'm late, it was the earthquake" will be an acceptable excuse when I am tired and groggy and generally on sluggish form for work in the morning? (oh how I'd like to be working flexi!)

I think it may be worth mentioning in the morning anyway "I'm a bit hungover because I couldn't get back to sleep after the earthquake last night so had to have a few glasses of amaretto to calm my nerves..." might be an appropriate thing to say :-)

Annoyingly enoguh I can't sleep now and won't be able to now so I'm gonna be knackered when I get to work - hope you get some sleep!

I heard the earthquake was centred in Lincolnshire, but a friend here in Reading said his guitars were playing themselves in the middle of the night!
Hello btw : )

Yep, still here, but in a suburban outskirt (!) rather than town centre these days. With a little cat called Mischief : )

I think they say the best place to go is a doorway.

but what if the doorway is structurally unsound? Think perhaps the doorway between my hall and my garage might stand the best chance of staying upright - will aim for there next(?) time it happens!

I had geology inflicted upon me as part of my first degree and you're not missing much really, just made me hungry looking at rocks (which I admit is a little weird!)

And yep, doorframe if you're worried, although I was just confused and went back to sleep totally oblivious of what it was!

Aftershocks are usually quite small, I think the largest so far has been 1 point something but given that it was somewhere in Lincolnshire I think you're safe from anything noticeable until around 2019 now :)
*awaits 3 O'Clock 4.2 aftershock to prove him wrong* ;P

Ah! But you're NOT safe!

The time period works on probability that there may be an earthquake within that time, but there could be more...:D
