Hell's Bells! - with knobs on!

I suppose my bad sleeping habits have paid off for once. At about 2:00am someone tried to break into my house and scared the living daylights out of me ( Read more... )

Thats awful. Its also horrid when you're alone and in the middle of the country, and your dog would probably lick the burglars to death!

Can you set your ghosts on im?

Sorry, that doesn't help much. Sorry I haven't been able to catch up on the scrabble today. I work at home on Mondays which is why I was able to play then, but can't get into facebook at work.

The dog did bark - he has a kickass bark. I don't think he would lick them either, he is very wary of other adults due to his earlier life.
It's the audacity that scares me. They could see me through the window but I can't see anything outside at night because there are no street lights anywhere near us. They were trying to get in even though they could see me - that makes it more scary for me.
I'm wondering whether the man who wanted to charge me £50 to board up the broken window is pissed because I've taped cardboard over it instead? That's just wild thinking isn't it?

Yes. You'll feel better in daylight. My house insurance covers windows for free - is it different there?

I wish I was closer, and I'd keep you company, and scare them off.

You are a darling. :)
It's light now and I do feel better.
I'll try the insurance company but my windows are diamond leaded and they are extremely expensive to make so I don't know what my chances are. It's an urgent matter now though.

God, that sounds scary. Speak to the neighbours, see if anything happened to them.
I'd get a burglar alarm if I were you, just for peace of mind.
It's weird, though, with you living in such an isolated place. Strange behaviour for a burglar.
Just a thought; maybe it was kids/youths, playing a prank because they knew someone was in and they'd scare them? I mean, a more extreme version of the kids we get here who knock on the door and run away?
((((hugs))))

It wasn't kids, they drove off in a car. I saw a car come down about an hour previously and thought at the time that it was odd - someone else up as late as me. That was the car that drove off after.
I've spoken to some neighbours this morning, they heard the activity but seem to be alright otherwise. Next door neighbour saw three young men yesterday afternoon drive down, and thought they seemed to be skulking or casing the area. Most strangers down here are walkers. These lads just hung around.

So the police have their descriptions now, and everyone's aware. Hopefully they won't come back.
(when I said kids, I meant youths. Sounds more like pond scum!)

I'm so glad you're okay, Sue, and I'm really impressed with your reaction to yell, "Fuck off!" I'm not sure I would have been as brave in your place (maybe I would have hidden under the bed? Fat lot of good that would do)

Here's hoping it was an isolated event and no one ever does anything like that again. And here's also hoping the window Stan broke gets fixed ASAP.

Oh yes, I'm extremely articulate (NOT) in this sort of situation. LOL

My insurance company doesn't pay for damage caused by domestic pets. Of course not! However, I did manage to get a glazier out this afternoon to fix it. He did use some window tacks to secure the lead work but arrived with glass. Go figure?! So will return on Saturday to fix it some more. I feel lucky in that he can fix the individual diamond panes and the total bill including todays visit is half the price the other man wanted to simply board it up. It'll do untill he can find someone who does leadwork to replace all the windows. I wonder what that quote will be?

Sorry, he came WITHOUT GLASS.

oh god Sue how frightening! I'm so glad you were able to scare them off. I remember how I felt after our place was broken into in Amsterdam, and I wasn't even there for that. It was unsettling, to say the least.

I'm glad you've been able to get that window fixed, at least.

Yes, I was very scared that night. I just found it hard to believe, and obsessed over why they should try the only house with lights on.
The shock is fading away now, especially since my window was fixed, but I'm still wary at night time. A shame really, because I always walked the dog late without even a torch. Now I'm scared to sleep in case I wake up and find someone in the house. I suppose that will fade too.
I don't imagine I scared them off. I assume they were opportunistic and thought maybe the house was actually empty with the lights left on as a security thing? Who knows?
