i'll never learn to never say never

I fold.

I'm moving to Dreamwidth. It would be elegant to wait until March 20 which would have completed 20 years here at Live Journal. 20 freakin' years. I've made a lot of friends and can say that Live Journal has made my life richer and fuller than I could possibly imagine ( Read more... )

I'm not ethically comfortable with Dreamwidth, so I'll just say that I've really enjoyed following your life, and getting to know you over the years.

What about Dreamwidth makes you ethically uncomfortable?

That whole DW melodrama was over a decade ago now, but it still infuriates me to even think about it. The whole saga is way more than a comment's worth, but I'll just say that the duo behind it are two of the most execrable humans to ever grace the internet. They did more do destroy long-form blogging than anyone this side of Mark Zuckerberg, and I would never entrust my words to their hypocritical whims.

My feeling about the current political situation -- and honestly not trying to convince you to change your mind, here -- is that the handwringing I'm seeing elsewhere is nothing more than xenophobia disguised as self-righteousness. LJ has been a path of communication for Russian dissidents for years now, and given the geopolitical situation over there it seems more important than ever to support that.

I do not know how I missed all that from before but I do appreciate your telling me and also your thoughts on the role of LJ in Russia. Thank you.

I'll be following your exploits via rss so you may yet see me pop in for a comment now and again.

I've been on DW since 2012 and only really started to use it more since LJ switched to Russian servers in 2016-17. A lot of my LJ friends had already nuked their LJ accounts or moved to different social platforms since then.

I have often wondered why, to be honest.

My own observations is in the Comms my LJ friends and I used to post in were long dead since the early 2010s and now are no longer active or updated. Others moved on because of their lives, changing interests and time. I know some of them left LJ because they didn't feel safe on it anymore because of lack of a safe space for those in the LGBTQ community since Russian politics is notoriously anti-gay. Or they left because of personal politics and beliefs in general. Many also left because they didn't like LJ's frustrating new changes or upgrades and sought different social platforms.

I’ll be following you there. I have the same user ID over there, too.

Sometimes, you’ve got to take a stand, even if it’s just a raised middle finger.

Unfortunately, there isn't, and last I knew, they don't intend to make one. Iirc, the logic is by having an app, you have to abide by the terms of service of the App Stores. Since what made LJ so popular were the fandom and LGBTQIA+ communities, they didn't want to police that based on the owners of the app stores. I could be remembering if wrong though
