That all looks so incredibly complicated and confusing!! I agree that the test tubes are pretty, but holy crap, that's a huge pile of plates. Those are the things you smudge germs on and see if they grow right? And you had to make notes about what you saw in them? How much time does each of those represent?
Thankfully, I didn't deal with the plates. I did make media and pour the majority of the plates (ie. pour the agar media into the plates so that there is a surface for the bacteria to grow), but that wasn't too time consuming, just tedious.
Two of my group members did the spread plating (ie. spread the bacteria from an inoculated broth) and counted the resultant colonies. That was time consuming! (I couldn't tell you how long it took, but a long time.) And the photo only shows a fraction of plates. Every day there was a stack that big to streak and count! For statistical purposes, you only count plates that have between 30 and 300 colonies. Many plates had far more colonies, and the colonies are tiny. Thank goodness I didn't have to deal with that!
