Don't fuck with my 'bucks

Sep 13, 2010 21:46

Trying to be ~environmentally friendly~, I bring a reusable coffee mug to school. I'm a Starbucks gal, and for those of you familiar with Starbucks, their sizing is as follows: short (8 oz), tall (12oz), grande (16oz), and venti (20 oz). I always order a tall coffee, as a grande is too much for me, so of course the reusable coffee mugs I buy are ( Read more... )

I used to be a barista. Fuck them.

So, from a barista's point of view, what do you think of her behaviour and attitude? With the exception of one Starbucks barista, I've never encountered any attitude like that! (This was not a Starbucks barista though, but a food service employee of the school.)

I'm not a fan of Starbucks, mostly because I was trained to not like them. But I don't like the company I worked for, either, so screw them. If it helps, the food service company that does the on-campus "Starbucks" here sucks, too.

Are you just getting coffee-coffee? Just poured out of the hopper into the cup, no frills? Before I fill it up, I ask you what size it is and if you want cream, you pay, I fill it. If it turns out I rang you up differently from what you paid me, I just let it go unless you're being significantly shorted (in our shop it would have been like 40 cents difference between a medium and a large). I fucking hated that job because of my coworkers, but the barista-ing itself was lovely, and I do miss it.

Yes; I am getting drip coffee, no 'ccinos. So if I order a 'tall' coffee, I want a tall coffee! Not a 'tall' coffee with a significant amount missing! At the proper Starbucks locations, some baristas will ask if you want room for cream. But this woman lied, to cover her mistake!

I just let it go unless you're being significantly shorted

I was being significantly shorted, which is why I said something!

I always order my coffee black, even though I know I'd have to do the milk/sugar thing myself anyway, so then they know (unless they're an idiot... which yeah, this one was) to fill my cup to the brim.

And people take different amounts of milk and sugar! So you can't assume that you need to dump out XXmL.

I don't understand places like McDonald's or Tim Horton's that dump milk in for you. Well, I think those places do, not that I ever order coffee from them!

Ugh. Who the he'll cares if you give the customer an ounce or two of extra coffee? Drip coffee had got to be one of the cheapest, highest margin, least labour-intensive things they sell. This seems like it should be a clear gie the customer the benefit of the doubt type situation. Also, someone who sells coffee for a living should be able to tell the difference between 12 and 16 ounce pretty easily.

This situation is exactly what we were told in training - just comp them the extra coffee, it's better to lose 25 cents than a lifetime customer.

And the kicker is, I WAS COMPLETELY RIGHT!

THIS.

So many things were wrong with what happened, and your comment covered it all, including being able to tell the difference between a 12 oz and 16 oz cup!

The woman was not only WRONG, but she argued with me (why?!), had a snotty attitude, and then tried to lie about it.

And in the end, I was right, of course.

in the starbucks I worked in, we were told to charge all reusable cups as talls, unless it was obviously gigantic, like the old timmy's cups. Plus you are supposedto get a discount for using your own cup.

At school, we get a 15 cent discount.

this is why I always say NO ROOM. (that's Sbux lingo for "I don't need room for cream/milk"). And if they don't fill it up the first time, I say, "excuse me, that was supposed to be NO ROOM".

Reply

surrey_sucks September 14 2010, 15:50:54 UTC
Yes, I do know the lingo! Sometimes I am asked if I want room (but I am asked, they don't decide to short me on my coffee), but usually, they just fill it up! But anyway, the leaving room for cream was just a lie; she purposely didn't fill it up because she thought I was lying about what size it was!

ya, this woman was clearly a dumbass. But good not to even let them use that as an excuse! The people at the real Sbux are usually pretty good about asking, though.

Now, I will never go back to the kiosk in the bookstore--I'll just go out of my way to the real Starbucks! (But being in WESB all the time, the bookstore was convenient.)
