A couple of days ago I was on the bus going home. At a bus stop along the route, the driver closed the doors and was just starting to pull away from the curb when he saw a guy running for the bus. Even though they're technically not supposed to let people on once they've pulled away from the curb and the next bus would have been in 5 or 6 minutes ( Read more... )

Yes, I always make sure to thank bus drivers for waiting for me as well - especially since it takes me a bit longer to get to places! Sometimes they even lower the step for me before I even get on the vehicle! That definitely deserves a thank you!

Sometimes the bus driver waits for me too and when I know for a fact he/she waited for me, I ALWAYS thank him/her!! I also ALMOST ALWAYS say thank you when I get off the bus. The only times I don't is if 1) the driver happens to be an asshole 2) the bus is REALLY full or 3)if I am distracted and almost forget it's my stop, so I get off in a hurry. I love it when I begin a chain of thank yous (like, I say 'thanks' and so do the other 5 who get off the bus at the same time).

As for that woman- what the hell is wrong with her? I can't stand people like that. I don't know if I would have intervened either, but I will say I HAVE intervened once before. Crazy people.

I almost always say thank you when I exit a bus as well. However, I don't if I'm leaving through the back, or if the driver is an asshole. Most people do thank the driver when leaving. I don't think it's absolutely necessary, and because so many people do it, it's fine if a few don't. But if a driver waits for YOU, yes, you better fucking thank him/her!

The woman was so rude, full out YELLING at the driver. And her accent, and very unattractive appearance, just drove me crazy! Ugh! I was so thankful when she got off! This was just not a situation that really called for any intervention, as it probably would have gotten worse. At least we all knew when she was getting off, and it had not escalated to physical violence.

i think most people here thank the driver, tho, the TTC bus guys will stop if they spot you racing for that door.

( the trams less so, but they're on a much more fixed route.)

Still, transit courtesty here is better tho, if you act like an arse-wit, someone will likely point it out to you. if you're blocking doors deliberately, you WILL BE MOVED.

I really dislike people who have inappropriate histrionic reactions on transit ( ... )

Different cities have very different transit cultures.

Interesting. Here in Vancouver, the culture, it appears, is to be rude and inconsiderate.

why should he thank the guy, wasn't he just doing his job?

Had the bus driver just been 'doing his job', he wouldn't have waited! They are under no obligation to wait if you are not at the bus stop, and waiting for someone is a nice courtesy. Too bad the guy was too oblivious to realize that "Hey, someone did a nice thing for me, maybe I should thank him!"
