Being a fan means waiting for six hours in the freezing cold to be able to experience the songs that you've had on repeat for months.

Yes, being a fan means commitment and emotional investment. That's another reason why it's like being in a relationship, the difference being that the relationship is from afar and you share it with thousands of other fans.

...well, in my travels and experiences...there's been much ass-smacking, hugs, pokes, bed sharing, carriage rides...etc etc. So I guess, yeah. Pretty much. ^_^

For me, being a fan of AFI means that I support them and dont turn my back if they do something I disagree with. I dont talk shit about my band in the presence of people who do. I stand up for them if someone does and explain why I think they deserve my loyalty if its questioned. Its not something that can really be explained. You just do it and do what comes natural.
