And it's still fascinating.

Things to do online when you're dead by dudski, linked in fake_lj_deaths. dudski tells the story of a girl she'd known online years ago who lost a father in 9/11 and a boyfriend in Iraq and who was then, eventually, killed herself in a car accident. OR WAS SHE ( Read more... )

The Tait article is really excellent, except I wind up thinking "well, why can't I imagine that I'm Tom Hanks?" When I was a kid I was He-Man and Conan and various Ninja Turtles and Spock and Riker and never saw any problem with it. (And I had male friends playing She-Ra and April O'Neill, incidentally.)

I completely agree that there need to be more stories told about women and more badass female characters. But I don't think the exclusion of them means we all sit around doing nothing because we need females to emulate.

Hm. I don't think he's saying that all women sit around doing nothing unless there are female to emulate. He's saying that in a large amount of the media we consume, there are very few female protagonists who are able to break out of the box. Women dream bigger than how they're usually portrayed onscreen, and I totally get that. When I was a kid, the male characters were my favorite, because the women never got to do anything interesting. And while I didn't necessarily understand why that was, I DID feel an internalized, low-lying sense of disappointment and dread that this WAS what women were expected to do, and it would be my life, and if only I could have been born a boy I could do interesting things. I think he's speaking to that ( ... )

Yep, everything you say is very true. And on some level it's probably important for men to see those women piloting starships and kicking ass as well.

Totally off-topic. But just so you know, I have finished copies of your artwork without text too, if you want them. I didn't include them in my final submission because they're just the same pics with no text. After the reveal, if you'd like them, just let me know and I'll send them.

I happened to be listening to NPR when I clicked your post. It was like variations on a theme. http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/447/the-incredible-case-of-the-pi-moms

I've read so much now, and watched so many movies, it seems really weirdly common!

I love a good "she said she died but she DIDN'T!" internet story. Sadly, there are way too many of them.

I read the whole thing. I can't believe "she said she died" and then didn't create a new username!
