Dave had promised Rick he would stay up and wait for him, but made the mistake of lying on the sofa with the remote control while he waited. He was still feeling crap himself, and went out like a light. Aimee was on a long night shift, so he didn't have her there to distract him and she must have been in a surgery, because there weren't even text messages with the phone beeping to hold his attention. It was the buzzer on his apartment that woke him up so abruptly he fell off the sofa. The remote control crashed to the floor from where it had been resting on his stomach and he scrambled up, needing to take a moment to find his bearings and fight off a dizzy spell.
The clock told him it was closer to eleven than ten, and he figured Rick needed to make a few stops along the way. Dave really wasn't surprised. He cleared his throat and hit the button on the intercom as he buzzed to open the door downstairs. "S'open," he said hoarsely and stayed standing at the door, rubbing his eyes tiredly to wake himself up. At least he got a bit of sleep and didn't toss and turn restlessly worrying about the test results coming from his doctor the following day.
