In the 1950s, my father refused to say the Pledge when he was a boy. It might have even been the late 1940s, I can't remember how old he was and all of the parties involved are now deceased -- but he got in trouble for it and my grandmother went down to the school to defend him. She gave them all a piece of her mind and he was not required to say it again. He said he'd stand and mouth the words or just do nothing.

I always omit the under God" parts when I go to public meetings and they say the pledge. It's funny, as a kid I swear I thought we were JUST pledging to the flag -- the rest of it, the "and to the Republic..." always seemed like an afterthought! The "to the flag...under god" parts are the only parts that many people seem to take to heart!
