Sakurai Yuuto, Deneb

Spoilers for entire series

Prompt from 31_days. November 5th. but not without considerable regret

His cheek still stung from the punch his younger self gave him, a throbbing ache that even Deneb's cold compress could not soothe. It's not altogether unwarranted, Sakurai reflected, especially after he had almost blithely informed his younger self that their future is endangered, and that the only way they could ensure its survival was by sacrificing their combined existence. And Yuuto had only stormed into the Vega train cabin, not off the Zeroliner, so Sakurai decided to count it as a positive towards convincing Yuuto to become Zeronos.

After all, who else could he depend on, if not himself?

"Are you sure it's a wise idea, Sakurai?" Deneb queried, putting a fresh glass of orange juice on the table after clearing the broken pieces from where Yuuto had shoved it over.

"I can depend on no one else," Sakurai said quietly, turning one of the Zeronos cards over in his free hand. "If I had a choice..."

Airi's younger brother being Den-O was not something he would have chosen. Neither was this, of course, but Ryoutarou seeing his face had forced his hand (stupid, stupid move that it was, to not run at the first instant the Imagin appeared), and he needed an extra hand, a greater distraction to lure Kai's attention away from the true key.

Sakurai was all right with sacrificing his own existence for the greater good. He could only hope that his younger self would also understand the future's need as well. "Do not worry, Deneb," Sakurai said at last. "I have faith in myself."

"With all due respect, Sakurai, he's too young-"

He lifted his head at the whirr of the train door, and waited, almost with bated breath, as Yuuto walked in. Sakurai recognised the way his jaw was set, the way he refused to look at him. He could not push himself, not at this crucial time, but all the same, Sakurai knew what Yuuto's decision would be.

"Tell me what I must do," Yuuto bit out, and despite the sudden guilt that gripped his heart at those words, Sakurai smiled.
