Rokudo Mukuro, Dokuro Chrome
For
31_days. April 8th. Sleeping with ghosts.
In reality, Nagi knew that she was recovering in an abandoned storehouse, being ineptly cared for by two teenaged boys not much older than her after they stole her "dead" body from the mortuary. Mukuro-sama had given her new organs to replace the ones that she had lost, but she still had to let her own body heal on its own from the more superficial injuries, and thus spent most of her time sleeping.
And dreaming. Dreaming sometimes entailed being with Mukuro-sama, walking with him along well-trodden footpaths, or sitting under the shade of an enormous tree, like now. Mukuro-sama did not talk much, but he laughed his curious laugh, often without reason.
She found she liked being with him. It was funny how well she had adjusted to having Mukuro-sama constantly with her, considering that she never liked having anyone get close to her before. Nagi wasn't sure how Mukuro-sama had done it, because she hadn't wanted to live when she first met him, and it wasn't the first thing Mukuro-sama had offered anyway.
No, he had offered something much simpler. I have need of you.
"Penny for your thoughts."
"It's...it's just strange, that's all."
"Strange is my world," he said, and pillowed his head on his gloved hands. She resisted the urge to do the same, and instead pulled her knees up to her chest.
"It feels strange. Being dead."
"Oh?" Mukuro opened his blue eye at her. "Do you regret it, then?"
"N-no!" She shook her head, and then said defiantly, "I like it this way. It's better."
"Oh Chrome." He laughed, and then quietly said, "Do you know what my name means?"
"The dead." There was no stutter from her lips, even if the thought of it was taboo.
"Yes. The dead within the dead. Aren't you scared of me?"
Nagi sucked in a breath, hoping that she wouldn't sound silly when she replied, "Ghosts should sleep with ghosts though. Isn't that right, Mukuro-sama?"
He opened both eyes to look at her, and then he smiled. "You're such a witty girl, aren't you, my cute Chrome."
She blushed.
