Tokitoh knows that the end of the world could be very well be just around the corner. He has his own warning sign, after all. The devil's claw embedded in his right hand serves as a constant reminder, always itching something fierce in the hot summer and piercing cold when it wasn't busy shooting white fire down his wrist and arm. To make it worse, he lives with what he thinks might be a former yakuza, making the odds of the world ending before lunch highly probable.
He's just surprised that he's lived this long so far. Kubota talked once about having devil's luck with that devil's hand, not unkindly, but Tokitoh had curled unconsciously around his hand and the subject was dropped almost immediately and, to his knowledge, never brought up again.
It's not that he fears the world ending. Heaven knows he's annoyed at life, sometimes furious at it, and if Kubota was ready to say goodbye so was he. Sure, he may have liked knowing things like where his right hand had gone and how many girls Kubota had kissed and did dirty things with and the real reason why Kubota didn't bother buying an extra bed when he so could afford it and they had to make do with one.
However, those things aren't that important, Tokitoh feels. He's learnt that life was better lived day by day, step by careful step. He's learnt that memories made of the present are infinitely more precious than trying to retrieve a forgotten past, and sometimes, things don't really need reasons at all.
The world can end tomorrow, for all Tokitoh knows, but inside his human hand he's clasping Kubota's, and wherever their life takes them, even if it's heaven or hell or just nothingness, he knows for certain that they'll go together.
